Is Santa Real? The Origins of Saint Nicholas

As Christmas swiftly approaches, many people around the world beg the same question: is Santa real?  While the common consensus among people ages 10+ is that Santa is fake, these nonbelievers are the bane of Christmas spirit.  Santa is the main cause for the joys and wonders of the holiday season.  Without Santa, Christmas would forever be tarnished without its spirit.

Much like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, Santa is considered by many to be a cryptid that started it’s fame in the 4th century AD in what is now modern day Turkey.  Santa, otherwise known as Saint Nicholas was in fact a real person who became a bishop and a very popular saint in Christianity.  This is where most of the definitive evidence of Santa ends, but Saint Nicholas supposedly had a reputation for his generosity and kindness, especially towards children.  While being a very popular religious figure, Saint Nicholas would soon be popularized in the Netherlands, more closely resembling the modern Santa folklore.  The Dutch honored Saint Nicholas through ‘The Feast of Saint Nicholas’ where gifts would be laid in the middle of the night from the parents of children.  Unlike modern depictions of Santa, Saint Nicholas’ outfit was far from his usual attire, including a tall, pointy hat and a donkey to ride on from house to house.

The legends of Santa eventually made their way to America.  The stories of Saint Nicholas were passed down from generation to generation as the Dutch started colonies in America.  As most legends do, the legend of Saint Nicholas was changed greatly over the years, adding new details like riding a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer.  The transition to American culture included many embellishments, but the spirit of the holiday remained the same.  I think that the masses of joyous energy over the many years of Saint Nicholas’ celebrations have contributed to Saint Nicholas becoming a cryptid-like entity capable of many of the things that the legends of Santa say.  I think that Santa continues to bring joy and wonder to the children of the year while maintaining his secretive, mysterious persona.

Do you think Santa is real?

What do you think about the origins of Saint Nicholas?

  • Well done Cole.

  • After doing some heavy analysis of the image posted above, I have come to the conclusion that Santa Claus is in fact, a real person. Now, what sold me in this were the clickbait arrows. While one would have done absouletely nothing for your case the 2nd one boosted it a little, but by the third one I was completely convinced. With the circle around his face there's no possible way I could believe this weren't Santa! Thank you for identify him, for I must report him as he is indeed a federal criminal he needs to be locked up for many many years. Ever seen the Santa Clause? Know how Scott become Santa? Yeah, by killing the previous Santa. Guess what, murder is a crime in case you didn't know, and while you might not want to see Mr. Christmas himself get sent away he isn't exempt from the law. So if there isn't a Christmas this year terribly sorry but that's what you get when you allow such a man to run free.

  • I think that santa clause is just something for little kids to believe in or somehting for them to enjoy during the winter months. It's always nice to recieve gifts and enjoy the day with family so why not the biggest running inside joke in history.

  • I do not think Santa is real but it would be a very cool thing if he actually was. I mean he could be real for all i know ive seen him sitting at the mall a lot but i feel like he is not real. I really did think he was really when i was a kid i wish it would of been true.

  • In my opinion Santa might be real because i saw him sitting on the malls some time and he looks like a great funny guy. I hope i get to chit chat with him some time.

  • I personally don't think Santa's real because some kids in 5th grade ruined it for me. Santa is the mascot of marketing and of the Christmas spirit, but he's not real. Saint Nicholas is obviously real, but Santa is just a character based off of of Saint Nichola's deeds and actions.

  • The history of this is very interesting, but santa clause is not realistic. Some parents use this lie as a way to make their kids act better and listen to them, but some use it as a positive thing to make the holidays more exciting.

  • Santa is not real and is only a ploy that parents use to make the children act nice for the holidays

  • Santa is not real, it's all fake and zero proof that he is real. It's just one big sham that parents tell their kids so that way kids get super excited for gifts they want and get for Christmas. I feel like parents should not even bother telling their kids about Santa because a few years later they will figure out he is not real.

  • I did believe in Santa when I was little but was still doubtful. I was in my mom's room one time and found a really long receipt and it had everything that was in my stockings on it. And I woke up when I was on the couch and I seen my mom put a present under the tree and I looked at it and saw it said from Santa. No, I do not think sante is real.
