Is online anonymity a problem?

The thing about the internet is you can go on there and speak your mind without anyone knowing who you actually are. Online anonymity has both pros and cons. But does it have more cons than pros?

There is a long list of both pros and cons with online anonymity. It creates a more honest and open environment to discuss and communicate about different topics. Online anonymity allows everyone to speak freely and have their opinions heard. It also allows people who are restricted from communicating with the outside world to speak out. The government and police force also use online anonymity to serveil the internet space and get information for illegal activities.

The downfall of online anonymity is that it increases the “Hiding behind a screen” effect. Yes, it allows people to speak their mind but WITHOUT taking accountability. That induces the lack of empathy and intellectual thinking. With that being said, people lose control of their behavior. People start to forget that the person on the other side of the screen has feelings. The cyber bullying rate goes up because of online anonymity. Online anonymity makes it more likely for people to attack others online.

Do you think online anonymity is a problem?

Do you think online anonymity is useful?

Should online anonymity be banned?

  • Thank you for doing another topic. I know you had already posted one so I will take that into consideration.

I rrally like the topic but overall, your summary is quite brief. Look at studies that have been done and educate students on what experts say on the matter.

  • I think online anonymity can be a problem because that way you never know who you are actually talking to. You could think you are talking to someone your age, but you are actually talking with someone in their 50s. This could lead to human trafficking and kidnapping.

  • Online anonymity is a huge deal and as known cyber bulling creates people comitting suicide over social media.  Also we all know how much stress and depression can change ones life and this just may do it to you and the people you know.

  • I think that this isn't really a problem since everything can still be tracked. It is useful because it allows people to talk to others without being too afraid of being cancelled. I do believe that it should not be banned at the same time though.

    • I disagree. I think its a problem because its used for more bad then good. Yes, it can all still be tracked, but everything that they say, they're still saying it without having concequences right away.

  • Overall, I think online anoymity is not that big of a problem. Online anonymity can be useful because the police can use it to find crime while being anonymous. I think the problem with it is that it can lead to cyber bullying.

    • I disagree. I think online anoymity is a big deal overall. Cyberbullying can lead people to commit suicide and become depressed if it goes on long enough. I think its serious and often shunned to the side.

  • I think for certain things online anonymity is useful, like when the government or police force uses it to find illegal practices being used, but when used in a negative way it is a very big problem. Cyber bullying has definitely worsened because of people being able to hide behind a screen and bash on someone without giving away who they are. I think it should be banned for the open, and only used when it is needed by the work force.

  • I believe that online anonymity is a problem online. People need to own up to what they say online, and online anonymity doesn't help that issue at all. I do understand that it can be helpful to people, but overall, the cons definitely outweigh the pros.

  • I believe that online anonymity is very unnecessary. To start, I understand that the government might need to look for illegal activities, but does that make it right? Someone prying into your business. It's kinda scary to think, even if you're not doing anything bad, that someone might be looking into your information.
