Is Cheating On Exams Ever Justified?

Throughout the United States, schools expectations of students continue to rise. So is it a lot what schools expect of their students? When you look at your friend you probably don’t think of them as somebody that you have to compete against. You just see them as who they are, a friend. Now have you ever wondered what their class rank is? Is it above or below you? Are they more academically intelligent than you? Why should that determine who is better? Why should a simple letter or number determine your future?

We all know that if we ever plan on going to college we need to have something that is at least higher than a 2.0 on the GPA scale. Of course, there is always an imbalance and you could get accepted into a college with a lower GPA. Now when I make the reference that a 2.0 is all you need, I am referring to our local state schools or community colleges. Now if you want to be a bit more ambitious you are going to want to strive for something that is around the 3.5+ mark. We all know somebody or even ourselves that want to make it into an extremely competitive school. There are various reasons why they would want to. The most common reason is that the school that you go into determines your self-worth in the eyes of others. Some students are hammered with pressure because they believe that their only worth is a grade. So is it ever justifiable to cheat on an exam?

That A could determine if you finish the semester with a 4.0 GPA or not, or for others that D could determine if you pass the class or not. The thing is that one test can completely damage your record, and it’s not just one subject but multiple. The time frame in which we cover material is unbelievable. One day we are learning how to put a few equations together and then bam next thing you know there aren’t even any numbers, and it’s not even considered an equation anymore because there is no true answer. Math is not the only subject that goes by fast science can also fit into my example, to be completely honest I have no genuine idea what we have been doing in science for the past 3 months. I just pretend I understand and learn trends. The problem is that I don’t know what I’m doing or why I’m doing that I just know how to get the answer. To be honest, any main school subject would fit into my argument, and it's not the teachers' fault. It is just the way our curriculum advances. I’m not saying that it is ethically correct to cheat on tests, but I would understand in some situations because of the way our education system is set up.

   Could cheating be justified?

Do you think our education curriculum should be more focused and slower?

  • Well written and very intersting topic Paola! Besure to reply on three different days.

  • I think that it should because people shouldn't cheat on tests cause you should study ahead of time. but if they didn't teach you good enough about it then it shouldn't be.

  • I do not think that cheating can ever be justified. You can take your time to study ot just give your best. If the teacher did not teach what come in the test in class, then go to the school principle with some other students. There are other ways then cheating.

  • I do not think that cheating on exams should be justified because the point of an exam is to show what you know. However I think that if students are cheating on exams it should be a sign that the class is to difficult and that the information is too hard for them to learn.

  • I think that for some students the curriculum could be slowed down and more focused but otherwise if you don't need it then you shouldn't be cheating on tests and other things. Cheating shouldn't be justified and if you are struggling then you should study more.

  • I don't think that cheating should be justified. The exam is supposed to be a test to see how much knowledge you have retained. If you cheat then the teacher will have no way of seeing how much the students know. I do think that education should be more focused, but for some people it needs to be faster.

  • I will be honest cheating is not a bad think at all you cannot remember everything. I think if you have a final exam, or a semester test you should be able to make note on a flashcard and put keywords on it to remind you about what is the topic about.

  • I don't think cheating could be justified. I think you can always study or in many cases memorize the information and then do the exam. I think schools should change what they teach us because I feel like most of the time we learn useless information. For example in math we need to learn so many formulas and equations that after school or college you are not going to use anymore. I feel like they should teach us information that we will use.

  • I believe that cheating is completely wrong and you shouldn't do it. I think that if people do cheat they have a reason to. I think that since so many kids are starting to cheat nowadays that the teachers need to change their teaching style or just don't assign homework.

  • Cheating is not a good thing as it doesn't prepare students for what they need to learn. If they get through school with nothing but cheating, they won't be prepared for lifes challenges as they won't know how to deal with certain situations were they simply cannot cheat. Cheating cannot be justified as giving a student the right of way to cheat on an exam doesn't make any sense, no matter the situation. What the student should do is ask for more time to prepare, with either being busy or gone. Most instructors would much have you make the responsible choice and not be convicted of cheating.
