Is cancel culture a good or bad thing

Cancel culture or callout culture is when support for someone is cut off usually on social media. It has helped bring people to justice and helped to bring men sexualy assaulting women on the internet. On the other hand, it can also lead to online bullying. People can be attacked for their political views, physical and mental disabilities, religious beliefs, and race.

I have mixed feelings about this because while it can help stop crime, it can also lead to bullying.

What do you think about cancel culture? Do you think it is good for society or bad?

  • Brian,

I was happy to see you do this topic as I think it is a good one. I do think your summary is quite brief overall and you aslo should have replied more frequently to comments as well.

  • I think that it all depends on how it's utilized. in some ways it can be used kind of like a citizens' arrest, just online. On the other hand it can lead to bullying. Sadly, most of the time cancel culture is probably used to bully. I say this because there is way more oppurtunity to bully, versus find people who are commiting a crime on social media. However, this is one of the things you may face when you get a social media account. It's uncontrollable and just a concequence of social media.

  • I agree with you on having mixed feelings about cancel culture. think it has its rights and its wrongs. If it is being used to stop crime, it has a good purpose and is beneficial, but if it is being used to harrass people and bullying, it is unessesary and needs to be stopped.

  • I think that cancel culture can be both a good and bad thing. If it can be used for good such as stopping crime, then yeah I have no problem with it, but if it is being used for cyber bullying then I think it should be put to an end. I mean covid is a big enough problem as it is for people already, you dont have to go adding bullying in to someones life as well.

  • I think cancel culture is not right. Any woman could say something about a famous man or an up an coming star and ruin his whole career. Many football players for example have lost a place on their team or college because some of the accusations were believable but fake.

  • I think the situation it is being used in makesa difference, if it leads to stopping crime then I think it has a good purpose, but if it is causing online bullying then there are some changes that need to be made. So I agree with you, this also leads me to having mixed feelings on cancel culture.

  • Cancel culture is good for the most part but most big influencers get cancelled simply because people don't like them. If an influencer had a bad/offensive past, don't purposefully dig it up just to cancel them. This happens alot just for the people who cancelled them to forgive them. Its not your apology to forgive. Hold people accountable for their actions but don't harrass them because you don't like them.

  • I think it has it's place on social media but it is not used for that purpose very often. when people use it to bully people that is just wrong but when it is used to bring justice to people who deserve it I think that is good so I also have mixed feelings.

  • Cancel culture definitely has its ups and downs.  It can reveal some horrible things people have done and give them the punishment they deserve, but sometimes people can be incorrect on cancel culture.  Many times, the mistakes people have made and incorrect claims can ruin peoples entire lives.

  • i feel like cancel culture really depends on the situation and how many times theyve been "cancelled". but it shouldnt be the first thing we choose to do, typically bigger creators have huge influence and mean more to some people.
