Is Anyone Alive Out There?

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) has been monitoring an unusual light pattern in a system of stars for more than two weeks. This light pattern interests scientists because it suggests that a planet is passing by. This planet may be housing life since it is orbiting around this star system.

The star system, known as Tabby's Star, sparked interest a few years ago when the light pattern was discovered on an online astronomy site. Tabby's Star is 1,500 light years away. Scientists are using the Allan Telescope Array to study Tabby's Star and monitor wavelengths coming from the star.  Scientists say that they have not detected radio signals, suggesting that there is no life coming from the region of the star.

The Allan Telescope is located in the Cascade Mountains in California. It is trying to detect two types of radio signals which would be possible markers for technology, and thus for life. The first type of radio signals is a narrow-band signal, which a society would use if it wanted to announce its presence. The second type of radio signals is a broadband signal, which might be present if there was an ancient alien structure in the star system.

So far, any radio signals from transmitters (such as a television station or radar) haven't been detected from the area of the star system. However, scientists say that this doesn't completely rule out intelligent life in the star system. In the Milky Way Galaxy alone, there are an estimated one trillion planets, and we are able to see 100 billion galaxies. It is believed that 1 in 10 stars may have a habitable world capable of supporting life.

Do you think there could be life in Tabby's Star system? What leads you to believe this? Do you think there is other life in the universe? Why?

I do not believe that there is life in Tabby's Star system, just because the scientists have done extensive research in the area and there are no detected radio signals. However, I do believe that there is other life in the universe, because the universe is huge and 1 in 10 stars are capable of supporting life. It is weird to think that there could be other people out there just like us, that we have no idea about!

  • Good job!

  • I think that there could be life there but from the evidence that the scientists have said it seems that there is not life there right now. I do think that there is life in the universe because it is so big and we haven't explored it yet but I do believe that from evidence that I have read and seen on the news that there could be forms of life in the universe.

    • I agree with you, I think that there almost has to be life somewhere else in the universe! However, the scientific evidence points to no life around Tabby's Star

  • I think there could be life on this planet, I get this strictly from the scientists. I do think that there is or could be life somewhere else, because the universe is so big, and must be full of more things than just us.

    • I agree! The universe is huge! There almost has to be someone else out there!

  • I don't believe there is life on other planets because God created earth just for us and not any other planets. That would just be weird to have people on other planets and the only way to get to them is to go through space; that just doesn't seem right.

    • The whole idea of space is crazy! I do believe that God put us here for a reason, but I also believe that it's possible for other life to exist.

  • I'm not for sure if there is life in the Tabby's Star system, but I am certain that there is some sort of life in the universe. Whether it is some sort of living organism or anything else. There is a reason why we are here so why shouldn't there be a reason why there is anything else out there.

    • I agree! That's a very good point! We got here, so it's likely that others were able to, as well!

  • I don't think that there is life on Tabby's star because there isn't exactly a lot of evidence showing that there could be. We haven't received any radio signals. I do think that there is other life out there. The universe is huge, bigger than we can even comprehend. The chance that one of those plants out there has life is big. I don't believe that we could be the only ones.
