Is Animal Testing Cruel?

In 1938 the United States Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act began and started compelling  companies to test their products on animals. In 1944 eye and skin tests developed and caused immense amounts of animal suffering. I think that companies testing their products on animals is wrong. Why do we get to hurt animals and keep them in a lab? The FDA does not require testing on animals and other ways of testing can be less expensive. The FDA states that the companies can use whatever testing is effective for them.

Many other countries and cities are banning animal testing. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in recent years banned using animals for testing their products. In the same year South Africa began banning testing on animals. Only recently have some states started to ban the use of animals for testing. In 2019 I wrote an essay on why we should ban it. One of the reasons I brought up was that animals are different from humans and 90% of the drugs that worked for animals failed for humans. Lots of people bring up the argument that some of the most important vaccines that were made used animal testing. However, there is no evidence showing that the animals were needed in the making of the vaccine.

I think that testing on animals is a horrible thing and it should be stopped. We have created other ways of testing products so why do we keep hurting animals.

Should we keep using animal testing? Why or why not?

Do you think animal testing is cruel?

What other ways could we find out if our products are safe?

  • Good topic choice Ava! I do think you could have expanded more in your summary as I really stress three good paragraphs at a minimum. What's there is well written though. I also think you could have replied more freqently as well on three different days.

  • I think that using animal testing, especially on things such as lab rats and bugs is okay. This is because there are not actually any other ways to test the effects of medical products and the like. You need a living organism in order to test how something works on a living organism. I would rather have a rat die during testing than a human being.

  • I agree with you, I think that animal testing is cruel and it shouldn't be done anymore. We shouldn't make another being suffer or die just for our own interests and profit, I'm sure that right now there are many other ethical ways to test products without having to hurt or kill animals. I believe that humans should stop using other species on earth like they are just living in function of us.

  • I don't think we should keep testing on animals I think that it is a cruel way of testing products. Many of these products are not safe for animals, and that can result in harm to them. I think that animal testing is cruel because the product isn't meant for them. Many products that are tested on animals are used for human use only. So there is no need to be using these products on animals. I find that vegan and cruelty free cosmetics work better any way. I think that using cruelty free and vegan free products is a benefit. I find that these products work better and last longer.

  • i think that useing animals for test is cruel because likeyou said animals are not lik,e humans and yah possibly they were used back then for test but where is the evidence for it. Animal testing is cruel because its an animal and i don't think they think about the animal they are hurting the animal for no reason there are other ways to test thing on other stuff but not animals.

  • I don't think we should test on animals at all. At first, many many years ago, it was a fairly good idea, because scientists had no real knowledge of what was toxic and what wasn't. Today, though, I completely disagree with any company that still decides to test on animals. I think for them it's almost like a tradition thing, but traditions will forever be questioned and renewed. A ban on all animal testing in America and everywhere else is needed.

  • I do not think we should test on animals, and I do think it's cruel to do so. I will never understand people that think it's okay to do this on specific animals just because they are rodents or other smaller animals. How is harming a rat different from harming a monkey? They are both living animals that do not deserve to be tortured.

  • I do not think that we should keep using animal testing, yes it may help us a little bit but in the long run if you think about it say the animal getting the vaccine has a major side affect and has to live with it for the rest of its life and has to deal with the pain that the vaccine has caused. And yes i do think it it cruel because animals are no less important than us humans. Also some aniamls have different reactions than humans will so if it does work on the animal who knows if the vaccine will work on a human in the same way. There are many other options that we could do instead of animals like some human would volunteer to get the vaccine if they got paid or if they got something out of it. they have done that in the past but they have mainly stuck to animals which is very cruel on our parts.

  • I disagree on some levels. I disagree with the fact that if there is going to be testing for a specific animal like cow or livestock vaccines you have to know if they work on that animal but thats for animals not people. If we can safely test on animals that represent humans in some parts then there shouldn't be any problems. Do you think you could name some animals and be a bit more specific.

  • I do not think we should continue to use animals for testing because they haven't done anything to deserve to be test subects. Yes, I think it is very cruel and should not be a thing anymore.  for some things we could test on humans. there are more than likely many poeple that would be down to be a tester if they get paid.
