Is 25 Minutes Enough to Eat?

It doesn't seem like everyone has enough time to eat lunch in the 25 minute schedule for lunch. I think they should add on a few more minutes for us because I see everyone rushing to eat their food. On the other side, there is more class time for teachers with the middle period. There are both good and bad outcomes to the 25 minute lunch period, but do we need more time or less time?

30 minutes can allow kids to be less rushed, as there is always a big line for lunch. According to Health Essentials, it shows that eating slower can have a lower risk of obesity. I feel like it also allows food to settle before moving onto the next class. Kids don't finish all of their lunch in the 25 minute period, which results in food waste. Slow eaters are also healthier than fast eaters, according to Health Essentials. I think the extra 5 minutes could make a huge difference, but you would have to cut some class time.

On the other side, you could only finish lunch in 20 minutes and be done with it.  Although some people could finish lunch in 5-10 minutes, they are likely overeating and having indigestive risks, according to Health Essentials. People who eat their lunch quickly can develop diabetes and become obese (Health Essentials). It also shows why some kids can get sick after lunch and leave. I think teachers would like a 20 minute lunch period so they have more time to teach instead of the lunch period taking up half of the time. I see many teachers complaining about the shortened period for lunch.

Overall, I think the 30 minute lunch would be better for everyone since they wouldn't be in a big rush for lunch. The 20 minute lunch would stress some people out, and there would be more chances of kids becoming unhealthy. Although the classes would be cut short in the 30 minute lunch period, it allows kids to not leave school because of getting sick for being fast eaters. The 25 minute period we currently have is in the middle of both the times I have talked about. The 25 minute period might be alright, but some kids still have to rush and eat, which is why I think we need an extra 5 minutes.

    • I agree, sometimes I think we don't need extra minutes, but sometimes I do when the line takes forever. It would help with the extra 5 minutes, but I just think the lunch schedule could always be better than what it is for now.

  • I think that we need at least 30-35 minutes to eat. It takes time to go get our food and then sit down. Most times I find myself rushing. I don't enjoy my food when I'm rushing. I would enjoy lunch more if I had more time to socialize with my friends and eat my food.

    • I agree, an extra 5-10 minutes would help us out because of the lunch lines. I don't like having to rush and eat lunch, and sometimes not finishing my lunch. Socializing at lunch makes me feel relaxed.

    • I agree, picking out our class 5th hour would help know where to sit and not always be finding a random spot. Sitting alone makes you feel like you have no friends to talk to. 30 minutes is much needed since of the lines at lunch and socializing.

  • I think we should get more time to eat, lunch is the only time I am able to see some of my friends that I don't have classes with. Lunch should be at least 30 minutes long. It is time to socialize, but also eat, and 25 mintues doesn't give much time for either of that.

    • I agree, I also see most of my friends at lunch, and you always want to catch up with them and socialize. 30 minutes would give us enough time to anything we need and finish lunch in a good time.

  • In my opinion, I think that we should have 5 more minutes of lunchtime. I feel this way because 25 minutes is too short of a time to eat a regular meal, much less talk with friends and wait in line. However, the meals at school are particularly smaller than normal ones and I usually eat all that I need in the amount of time. Sometimes I do feel like that I need to rush to eat after being later in line.

    • I agree, we need more time to socialize with friends while we eat. It sure feels like the meal is a way smaller portion than what we usually eat, and we still can't finish it in the 25 minute lunch period if we are at the end of the line.

  • I don't think that 25 minutes is enough for lunch. I think we should have 30 minute lunch periods. If you have 30 minutes then you dont' have to worry about rushing to get your food and rushing to eat. That way you will also have time to go to the bathroom and talk to your friends.

    • I agree, we need a few extra minutes to socialize and using the bathroom so we don't waste another E-hall pass. I feel like we would have less stress when there is 30 minutes of lunch.
