Iowa Homeless Veteran Population Increases

As years go by, more and more veterans end up living on the streets. Lawmakers in Iowa (and the US in general) are looking for a way to get homeless veterans off the streets. A study by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have noticed an increases in the state of Iowa. The number of homeless veterans nationally has decreased, but in Iowa it has increased 14.6% since the beginning of 2017.

What do you think should be done about the number of homeless veterans in Iowa and the US?

I definetly think that something should be done about the homeless veteran population. They have dont so much for our country and many are forced to live in the street, which I think is wrong.

Knowing that this is probably happening in a town near you, what would you try to do to help these vets that have no where to go?

Considering that these men and women have done so much for the contry already, I would try to raise some money for these people. The fact that Harlan is a small town and there are many caring people that support the military and veterans, I think it would be reletively simple to raise money for them.

  • Good story choice and well writtern! Overall your summary is brief and you only commented two times with two pages of comments.

  • I think something should really be done about the veteran homeless population. They've sacrificed so much for our country and brought the freedoms we have today. These people are living on the street like animals and I think it's awful.  Knowing that these men and women have done tons for our country, I think awarness and money should be raised. For even a small town like us, we could for sure raise money for these veterans.

  • I would assume that this trend is not just in Iowa, but other states too. It shows that saying something is not always enough, because you also have to act on what you say. We pour millions, possibly billions of funds into Veteran Programs, but in reality, that doesn't always help the living situation these people have.

  • I think they should try to help them, but there isn't really a way because if they have to lift the taxes to help the veterans the workers won't have enough money. If I have money left, I would probably try to buy them some food or I would help in a voulunteer kitchen where they can eat for a very low price.

  • There should probably be an extra financing program for veterans if they were in poverty. It isn't right for anyone to be on the streets, but people risking their lives for this country should especially not be on the street. Building more shelters or getting better welfare systems in general would help.

I'd probably try to find a charity to donate things to in order to help them.

  • I agree, I think that the state of Iowa needs to do something about the homeless veteran population. I think that the state of Iowa should build more homeless shelters and some specifically for homeless veterans. I would donate money to a local homeless shelter.

  • Maybe the government could give them some money for the start and build up a programm for homeless veterans where they support them and help them tofind jobs so they can live a better life

I guess one way to help them could be for example when you know them to let them live with you for a time until they have a job and enough money or you could donate money in your area to help them

  • I think theres tons of shelters out there, but that isnt enough. If theres anything America should be proud of its our veterans, but when it comes to these a lot of them are still on the streets. We should create a sponsor a veteran thing like adopt a family where we help veterans feel important and back on there feet. When one falls others come to pick you up.

    • I agree that there should be more shelters for these people. America should be proud of its veterans, but it doesn't always seem that way. I like the idea of sponsering a veteran. It would help the homeless veterans a lot considering that there are lots of people across the US who support veterans.

  • The government probably needs to give them a house and vechicle also job so they can get money. Also some of these people don't even know some of the homeless people are veterans that served for our country. I would give some money , and donate some winter accessories or even a meal for him/her.
