Insect Population Continuing to Decline

Insects help mankind out in many ways, They pollinate flowers and crops, they destroy bad or harmful plants, and they can even destroy other insects. But enjoy these helpful things while you still can, because the overall population of insects has been steadily dropping over the last few years. In a study recently done in Germany, over 75 percent of flying insects have been destroyed in the last 27 years. This study indicates that the same problem could be happening around the entire world.

What are some probable/possible causes for insect death?

In your opinion, should humans change any part of their lifestyle in order to limit the decline of the population of insects? In what ways can human change their everyday lives in order to help?

Insect death can be natural. Climates slowly change over time, which could be a cause. A more likely cause is evolution of predators, which also takes a lot of time to happen. Since this fall in number of flying insects has happened very quickly, it seems to be related to humans. A likely cause would be deforestation, or chemical treatment of plants.

Humans should definitely change their lifestyle, in the most obvious ways. Pollute the environment less, stop cutting down forests. A simple thing anybody can do is plant bee friendly flowers in gardens and avoid treating plants with harmful chemicals.

  • Well done overall! All of your replies were done on October 31st. Be sure to comment at least three different days.

  • I think that the insects are dying due to multiple climate things like pollution, global warming, deforestation, extermination and others. Humans should totally change some of their habits to ave the insects, they are necessary living things in our ecosystem too. They can stop spraying harmful chemicals on plants, and stop deforestation,  or even not swat and kill the little bee by you. Really anything little thing can help save the insects.

  • I think that pollution is one main reason why the population is declining. I think that humans could change their lifestyle, but I don't think that they necessarily should change their lifestyle because it's really up to them. One way they could change is by using less harsh products.

  • There are a lot of factors that play into the deaths of insects, for example, pesticides, human actively killing insects with bug sprays, flyswatters, shoes, etc. Personally, i dislike bugs, especially spiders, but i think if we use less chemicals on our food, and naturally keep the bugs away with a bug zapper, then the insect population could thrive once more. And instead of using house hold bug sprays that smell horrendous, we can use a more natural method, like sticky paper, or a bowl of honey, so that they get stuck.

  • 1. Human activity is definitely a part of the cause. Waste we throw out into the environment can kill bugs either directly (habitat destruction/pollution) or indirectly (poisoning, climate change). Then, of course, some causes could be just natural.

    2. Yes, such as keeping the habitats for the insects in good condition and safe for them to live in. Even if we can't stop pollution, reducing it can help the environment.

    • Definitely! We need to do small things to help the environment while we still can. Little things that help reduce small areas of pollution are very useful! Even refusing to litter is a small thing that can help.

  • I also think that the climate change is involved in the decline of the insect population. Yes, humans should definitely change their lifestyle. Not only to save the insects but also simply to prevent destroying the nature. Your suggestion to plant bee friendly flowers seems also very good to me because like you said it's simple and we really need the bees, and I think that it's in everybody's interest that they don't become extinct.

    • Insects could be adapting at different rates from humans or other predators, which could cause this issue. Humans should definitely work together to try to save the bees and other aspects of nature. Once it's gone, it's hard to replace.

    • I agree with you! Industrialization pollutes the environment quite a bit, and more factories are built as time goes on. Factories are constantly pumping out different harmful chemicals that affect the environment.

  • Pollution for sure. Also spraying pesticides on crops and even on small household garden doesn't help either. I think that we should try to stop using such harsh chemicals on everything. More people should also recycle and stop polluting the earth.
