Infant Stabbing at New York Daycare

On Friday, September 21st 2018 at 3:45 am in Queens, New York a woman stabbed 3 babies and 2 adults. Two girls and one boy, ranging from the ages of 3 days old to one month were stabbed by 52 year old Yun Fen Weng. There's more to the story than meets the eye. Investigators believed that foreign women (mostly asian) would give birth at the "daycare" before returning to their home country and applying for U.S. Citizenship. Mostly chinese, but some Korean and African families went to the unlicensed daycare. In the past, there was reported abuse situations with some of the daycare children but they were usually brushed off. Yun Fen Weng is currently at the hospital, but in custody and will most likely get a lot of jail time. When foreign women come to the United States to give birth to their "American Citizen" children that's called birth tourism. When a child is born on American soil, they are considered to be an American Citizen so people take advantage of that. The exact motives of the stabbing are currently unclear. All of the victims, babies and adults were in critical but stable condition so nobody has died, thankfully.

Questions you should answer:

1.) What would you do if you took your child to this daycare, and didn't know it was illegal?

I would be shocked. First off- I probably would make sure the daycare is 100% licensed and legal. I know when I have children, they will be in good hands with people i know well and trust. Daycares can be iffy because you don't always know what happens to your child. I would make sure this daycare was shut down. The woman who stabbed the babies and adults will probably get a lot of jailtime, and I would try my best to make sure of it.

2.) Why do you think "Birth Tourism" is becoming more popular over the years?

I think that some other countries are not the best place to live. The United States has a lot to offer, including freedom and a lot of equality. If I lived in a country where I didn't get fairly paid and it was difficult, I would probably want to live in the U.S. too. Many people come here illegaly from different countries because the U.S. is a great country full of many opportunities. Having your child be born as an American Citzen with a lot of possible opportunities would make sense. I don't think I could ever completely understand unless I was put in the shoes of someone living in a tough country wanting their baby to have a good life.

  • Good summary but you didn't reaply to any comments, which is worth 20 points.

  •  I would be very shocked that I trusted them to watch my child. Before I will ever put my child in daycare I will make sure it is a actuall business that has all the proper licensing. I would feel very bad for putting my child in that situation, I would probably not take my child to a day care anymore. Birth Tourism is becoming more popular because mothers and fathers just want a good life for their children, and if their child is a U.S. Citizen they can not be deported back. They just want the best life for their children to grow up in.

  • I think i would have checked more into the situation before sending my child there in the first place but if i had i probably would have been shocked and glad it wasn't my kid. i think they should make the laws for that a little more Strict  because some people come illegally just to have the kid than they say oh well i have a kid there so i need to come i feel like they should do it the legal way.

  • I don't think I would take my child here. If looking for a daycare I would make sure the person was licensed in child care and that he/she would provide a stable and safe environment for my child. I think that since the laws on immigration are becoming harder to surpass these women are looking for an easy way into the country. They don't want to wait to get their U.S. citizenship, so they result to birth tourism and get their citizenship later.

  • I think that "Birth Tourism" is becoming more popular because it's an easy way for foreign people to come into the country. If their children are born in the U.S., then that child is automatically given U.S. citizenship. I think that it gives foreign people another opportunity to get into the country and birthing a child who now has American citizenship is used to their advantage.

  • If I was in that situation, I would change daycares right away. Obviously I wouldn't want to be involved in something illegal because you could get into a lot of trouble. Like you said, I would want to know that my child is in good hands, so I wouldn't want my child to go there anymore.

Many people want their children to grow up in a well built and industrialized country, like America. Most countries these women are coming from aren't in the best condition I'm assuming, so they want to go somewhere where there's more to offer and is safer.

  • I would be very scared for my child. I would not take my child their anymore. But first you should check with the owners and make sure they are licensed and know what they are doing. These kids parents technically took them here without asking the owners if they are certified. Many people don't really know what actually happens at day cares, and I bet when these parents found out they were devestated. I would make sure to tell everybody that its not a relaible daycare.

  • Well I would have done my research to make sure I am taking my child to a safe and good daycare. Daycares can kind of be sketchy because you have no idea what they will do to your child. I think that the United States is a great country compared to other countries. Therefore, there are many people trying to get here to raise or have a family in our great country because of all the opportunities there is. I do think that the women should get jail time for what she did because that wasn't right.

  • I would be shocked, but these people should hve known that they were unlicensed. Most daycares have their papers somewhere on the walls. I think that they should have asked other parents for their opinions. I think it is becoming popular because it is giving the children better lives and more options for their future. The children could have better living conditions in American too.

  • I think some countries aren't in as good conditions as the U.S. is. The U.S. isn't perfect, but compared to other countries were people are censored and only given so much food, the U.S. would seem like a luxury. People from other countries wouldn't want their children to suffer the same way they did, so they would want their children to live in America. They would also want their child to be a citizen because citizens have many benefits, including a lower chance of getting deported.
