Indonesia Volcano Eruption kills 14

Mount Sinaburg in Indonesia erupted once again on February 1st. It has been rumbling for months and sent a major eruption that caused lava and pyroclastic flows up to 2.8  miles away. So far 14 have been killed, the authorities think there might be more, but won't know until the darkness fades. Among the dead included a local television journalist and four high school students and their teacher who wanted to see the eruption close up. Authorities had evacuated 30,000 people, cramping them in school, tents, and public buildings. Many people are desperate to return to their homes and farms.

How would you react to this situation? Would you go up the volcano to see the eruption closer?

  • Good job, but again, you could have replied a few more times.

  • Well at least they died an interesting death, but they knew there was a risk when they went up for a better view.

  • I know for sure that I wouldn't climb up the volcano. It is nice to know that we don't have any volcanoes close by.

  • I wouldn't go up to see the volcano closer because it would be dangerous as shown by the 14 people that died because they did.

  • Knowing that the volcano has been close to erupting, I think it was a very dumb move to go up to it and just stand on the volcano. I definitely would not do this. Volcanoes would be a different kind of extreme to deal with, and I think that I would just evacuate for a long time to make sure that I would not be affected by the ash-spewing monster.

  • Glad we dont have volcano's in Iowa, that would be really scary and i would probably never live near a volcano.

  • It could have been a lot worse, don't forget Pompeii. I hope that the activity will cease so that the good people of that place in Indonesia can sleep a little better at night.

    • I wish the same thing, but Indonesia is in the ring of fire and has 147 active volcanoes. I think they were lucky too, they cleared a lot of people out

  • I don't think that people who died were very smart for going up close to the eruption.

  • If I heard a volcano was going to erupt I don't think I would stay around to see it. I would've tried to get as far away as possible. I think it was really dumb that the 4 students and their teacher even wanted to get close to the volcano.
