Hurricane Maria was a category 4 tropical storm that hit the island of Puerto Rico on Wednesday and is said to be one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the island ever. It caused the whole island of 3.4 million people to loose power and a lot of the island was flooded. The town of Yabucoa was the first town to get hit by the hurricane with winds over 155 miles per hour. It was predicted to cover the whole island and last about 24 hours with the winds staying strong the whole time. Everything in the path was was destroyed and since Puerto Rico is an American island it is also our responsibility to help them out. Puerto Rico was hit with some of the other recent hurricanes also. The island wasn't very prepared for the storm so they took cover in stairwells, bathrooms and even closets to stay safe. Like many other storms this hurricane caused the island to receive over 20 inches of rain. Throughout the day the winds died down to about 115 miles per hour but was still unsafe for people to go outside. When Maria hit the island was still trying to recover from Irma that had slightly hit earlier in the year.

1. If you were in Puerto Rico when both storms hit, where would you go for a last minute shelter?

2. After Irma would  you have stayed on the island or gone to the US if you didn't know hurricane Maria was coming?

My answer:

1. If I were to be on the island when the storm hit I would first make sure my family was safe and then I would not go in my basement because that is where all of the water will go and it would flood. I would go to the concrete church by my house and stay there because it seems like it would be safer than my house.

2. If I had no idea the hurricane Maria was coming I would have stayed around to help the island clean up and make sure I could help as many people as possible. If there wasn't anything I could do to help I would go to the US to make sure I stayed safe from another natural disaster.

  • Good job overall Grace! Be sure to comment on three different days.

  • I have no idea where I would go for a last minute shelter. If I didn't know hurricane Maria was coming, I would probably have stayed on the island to rebuild my home and to try to live my life like I used to before the hurricane hit.

  • 1. I would try to get as far away from the ocean as possible. Because Puerto Rico is an island I would try to get to the closest of the center of the island as I could. I would also hide out in a very strong, tall building to stay safe.

    2. If I didn't know Maria was coming I would have stayed on the island. There probably weren't very many ways to get off of the island anyway, and I would believe I was safe after the first hurricane was over. I would also want to stick around and help families and friends clean up around me.

  • I would go up in the hill somewhere because it wont really flood up there as bad. I would of gone to the US because I feel like we have a lot more resources for things and are more ready for these things due to we have 50 states all around us not just an island.

  • As far away as I could in the time given. I would have left if I knew it was coming.

    • I do agree with you on going somewhere high and protective because even if you are on top of a hill you still have to be protected and I also like how you would stay and help even though another storm would be coming

  • I would have gone somewhere high with a sturdy structure and good support so im not gonna worry about the storm but if i stayed on the island i would probably just pray for the best outcome to happen.

  • If I was in puerto rico and both storms hit i would travel with the eye of the storm until it got down a couple of categories then go to like the us or something. I probably would've stayed to help with rescues and rebuilding.

  • I would go somewhere high but I don't want the structure to give out or break. I probably would've have stayed on the island because that is where my home is. And if I didn't know that Maria was coming I wouldn't be worried.

    • It is a good idea to think about the structure as well as the location of the shelter. And I also like how you said you would stay because that is where your home is located and you want to help out.
