According to a recent study, replacing animal products with plants that hold the same nutritonal value could potentially feed 327 million Americans along with an additonal 390 million more. With the help of a comupter simulation, researchers found out that by taking the land that would be usually used to rasie animals such as cattle, pigs, or chickens and using it to grow plants, twice as many people could be fed. Not only would more people be fed, but they would also be a lot healthier, making it so that medical issues and bills would occur a lot less. It would also reduce global warming considering there would be fewer greenhouse gases, which get into the atmosphere and cause global warming. Along with the pros, there are always some cons. One of those cons would be that we would have a lot less vitamin B12 and other nutrients in our diets. It also brings up a lot of questions about how businesses would function afterwards. Not everyone may be willing to go vegan, but it certainly is something to think about.

After reading this article, what are your thoughts on going vegan? Could you do it?

I definitely think that if it could cause such a big impact that would be a great thing to do for the world, but I also know that it is very unrealistic circumstance, and that there are a lot of people who would not be willing to give it up.

Do you think that the good about this scenerio outways the bad? Why or why not?

It is impossible to be able to know what it would do to peoples jobs and things like that, but it could also save so many lives, which in my opinion is worth it.

  • Great job Ainsley!

  • 1.  It good that we can feed all people in vegetable but not all want to just it vegetable for life. I could if we have some thing replace the meat.

    2. No but poeple will refuse because they like meat and don't like green food.

  • I don't think that I could go totally vegan, because it would be hard to not eat some of the foods that I like that just happen to have something from animals in it. If the whole country was converted to vegans, I think that some people could make it work, but others would outrage and try to get the meat and animal products back. I don't think that this conversion is going to happen becuase even though there are a lot of benefits, America and its farms have been like this for many years, and a lot of people wouldn't like the change.

  • I don't think I could go from 100% omnivore to 100% vegan, but gradually I might be able to. I'd be interested in going vegan like 60% of the time but allowing myself to indulge in meats, dairy, etc. the other 40% of the time. I think the idea of changing animal farms to food farms would be a great idea, but I think there are too many stubborn meat consumers that would throw a fit, if they were encouraged to change their farm. Because of this, I don't think the conversion to more vegan people would be likely to happen.

  • I could do it. There are so many substitutes now for like cheese and milk. I would do it, however my parents' worry of me not consuming enough protein is the reason I can't right now. I do think, like you do, the good outweighs the bad in this on the topic of saving lives.

  • I dont think i go vegan there are to many health problems with a plant only diet. Yes it seems like a good idea but it will not get rid of health problems it will just make new ones. In theroy it would but in pratic it just doesnt work out

  • I am very sure that going vegan would be a very good thing. Plus, it feeds a LOT more people. Although it would be hard to change, I would give it a try. It would be hard to see if the goods outweigh the bad because we never tried it before, but I think that it could outweigh the bad because it would solve a lot of hunger problems in the U.S

  • I don't thinkn I could go vegan and I don't support this idea. I understand why people are considering it but also think about all the jobs farmers would lose and how the economy would be negatively altered. Yes going organic could help with some hunger problems and a few health benefits but think about all the health benefits we would no longer get from meat. Not all grazing land could be turned into farming land, chaning that would require time, effort, labor, and lots of money. I can't say whether or not I think this scenario will be good or bad because there are pros and cons to both sides.

    • I agree that it is not a realistic idea considering that many people would lose their jobs, and a lot of money and effort would have to be put into it. THere are pros and cons for both sides, but in the end it most likely would not turn out well, considering how much this country relies on meat.

  • I don't think I would do it simply because there is no way to prove this could happen and even if it could, a lot of farmers make their living on meat and taking that away from them would cause a lot of job loss because they wouldn't have the righ equipment to raise crops instead of meat. I don't think it does because there is no proof that only eating vegietables is any healthier than having a balanced diet of meat and greens.
