Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking

Begining in 2010, January has been named “National Human Trafficking Prevention Month.” This was put in place to raise awareness and shine a light on this overlooked issue. Human trafficking is defined as using force or fraud to receive something that is wanted but not willingly given. The three main types of Human trafficking are known as, Sex trafficking, forced labor, and debt bondage.

Sex trafficking is widely known and thought of when trafficking is mentioned. This is when a person uses force physically, or even through bribery to push unwanted sexual intercourse. The International Labor Organization estimates approximately 40.3 million victims are affected by sex trafficking with thousands of that number coming from the United States. This specific type mostly affects innocent young children and women. There are also thousands of men victims all around the world. Forced labor is when a person is forced to work for anyone, doing anything and everything for hours and hours with no break, no pay, and little food and water. This causes famine and dehydration leading to death. This is known as “modern-day slavery.” Traffickers look for well-rounded men, who seem lonely or afraid, they are used for physical labor on things such as railroads or buildings. Children and women are forced into cleaning, cooking, and sometimes forced into giving birth to random men's children all against their will. Lastly is debt bondage. Debt bondage is used when a person is in doubt and can not pay their mortgage, rent, or loans. These people are searched out, taken, and forced into labor. They are paid very little and not nurtured well. Victims think that they are working towards getting enough money to leave, but soon realize they will die before earning enough money to buy out and leave. “ Statistics show that 1 in 5 Americans will die in debt,” according to Marketwatch. People worldwide are desperate for money and will do anything to care for their children, family, and even themselves.

Many programs are helping and supporting trafficked victims. We can help by donating money, clothes, sanitary items, and even more to programs that are working to help heal victims. Overall, I think that human trafficking is overlooked and should be treated as a bigger issue than it is treated. I think that schools should be informing and educating people and teens about this issue. We should also be  doing more and donating more to support surviving victims and the families of those who did not survive.

Do you think Human Trafficking is an overlooked global issue?

What are things the United States could be doing to prevent this and lower the affected percentages?

  • Human traficking id definitely overlooked among larger and smaller countries and larger world powers. To prevent human trafficking, the US could be putting more  fedrally mandated restrictions ononline buisnesses regarding personal information policy.

  • Well done Lily! I would like to see more of your personal thoughts/opinions on this topic though. Glad you did this to promote Human Trafficking awareness month.

  • I believe that human traffcking is a very overlooked topic. I believe that schools should do a better job educating students on human trafficking so they can be aware. Teaching students how to handle these situations could help prevent them, and students would know what to do in these situations.

  •  I believe its an overlooked topic. Teachers and parents need to start educating a little more about human trafficking. It could happen at any moment and any give time. If no one teaches about it how will the students know what to do in a situation like it?

  •  I think human trafficking is overlooked. People should raise more awareness for this topic because it is a very serious topic. I think people need to be more educated on this topic to help it be prevented. People all around are victims and human trafficking needs to be stopped.

    • I agree. I agree that we should be raising more awareness to this serious topic. It is very overlooked, and not discussed enough.

  • In my opinion I think it's overlooked. I think people can do better at educated kids about this because it's a serious topic. People need to know red flags when it comes to these things so they can be preveted.

  • I believe human trafficking is way overlooked. We don't talk about it enough anywhere, and that has probably led to people missing signs of somebody who is trafficked. There are so many things we could do to prevent the issue, and the biggest one is education. Everybody should be taught the signs of somebody who is being trafficked along with the signs of somebody who is trying to traffick you. This could save so many people since it is hard to tell you have been trafficked after the fact.

    • I agree. I think that it is very overlooked, and is not talked about nearly enough.

  • I think that human trafficking is overlooked way to much people don't bring enough awareness to this issue and make it seem like it is not a big deal when it is. The united states could do more by talking about it more, making educational programs, and even have people speak at schools every year to tell you what it is and how to prevent it.
