How much does school affect students' mental health?

Research shows that a lot of academic stress might increase the rate of getting depression or anxiety. Students who have academic stress most of the time do not do very well in school because sometimes they will feel pressured by their parents or maybe even teachers to do well in school which is not very good for a student because they tend to stress themselves out too much to do good in school so they don’t disappoint their peers.

Research has proven that mainly high school students are not as happy at school as they are in any other setting where they normally are. Studies have shown that during the summertime hospitals had the fewest visits for teenagers struggling with mental health compared to September through May. The month of May is when doctors get the most visits for mental health issues, the reason why May is the month with the most visits is that final exams and big papers are due, which is extremely stressful for the students.

I personally think the main reason why teenagers struggle with mental health is because they get so stressed about having excessive homework and stressing over tests, exams, and focusing on keeping their grades and GPA up. Some teenagers have a perfect 4.0 GPA but have terrible mental health because they tend to stress over academics to keep a perfect GPA.

-Do you think school affects students' mental health?

-What do you think teachers can do to help students decrease their stress about their academics?

  • Great topic choice and well done Kaelyn! Reading the comments was very interesting.

  • I think that school definetly affects sertin peoples mental health. I think that to help some people that schools should have less home work becuase most students already have enoughf things on their plate after school like sports or going to works at a job.

  • I think that it might affect some people's health. I think that they should do less homework and actually help students.

  • I think school takes a toll on individuals mental health. Kids don't have time to fit everything in their schedules which creates anxiety and stress. I think a specific level of difficulty is good to push kids, but sometimes the level is far too high. I think teachers could work on providing less homework and doing most of the work in class. I also think if cirriculums were better orgainized, it would help kids understand better.

  • I definitely think that school has a big impact on the mental health of teenagers. I believe teachers need to understand and consider that students do have 6 other classes. They should consider not giving us homework every day because we already have so much to do.

  • School does effect kid's mental health. Lots of us have depression and/or anxiety because of school. Teachers can first of all lay down a little. Not give us as much homework and work. Homework is still important so we can study for tests, but some teachers just give out way too much.

    • I agree, homework is nice to study from for tests, but when there is a lot it gets very stressful for students and then they just don't do it because of how stressed they can get.

  • yes, I think school affects students' mental health because they have a lot of stress with homework trying to get good grades and being responsible with homework one thing teachers can do to help students decrease their stress is by having them do less homework.

    • I agree, most students focus on getting a good grade rather than the material that they are learning when in reality they need to focus on their learning. If most teachers would assign less homework and keep it limited or only have in-class homework then I definitely think students' stress would decrease.

  • It can if they don't try then that adds extra stress on them and then that can lead to anxiety and depression. But, I think it's very good for you mentally because people all around the world want to try to get an edcuation and the fact that we get that oprrotunity in the US we shouldn't take it for granted. On the teachers prospective I think if they just limit the assingments so kids aren't spending hours on it, it would be good.
