How long should the passing periods be?

Over the years during Harlan Community High School's time, the passing period lengths have changed multiple times. Being 3, 4 and 5 minutes at different times. During Mr. Brun’s first couple of years at Harlan the passing period was 3 minutes long. The school then had a testing period where they had either 3 minute long passing periods with 2, 15 minute breaks throughout the day. Or they could have 5 minute passing periods with no breaks. The teachers and students voted on the 5 minute passing periods. It then got changed to 4 minutes. And then finally it has been 3 minutes for the past two years.

Some pros of longer passing periods would be people could finally have enough time to go to the bathroom and fill up water bottles. If a student ever needed help on homework, instead of staying after class to talk with a teacher. Which would result in students being tardy to their next class. They could talk to a teacher before class because of the extra minutes. The halls would also be less crowded as students would leave classes at different times. But some pros of shorter passing periods is we get out earlier. During the time when the school had 5 minute passing periods the school day was from 8:15 to 3:30.

Now some cons of both; longer passing periods result in longer days. Students also have more time to mess around and get in trouble with teachers. Some cons for shorter passing periods are students have no time to go to the bathrooms and fill up their water bottles. Also having classes on opposite sides of the school is a struggle. It’s hard to get to the next class in just 3 minutes, and students are counted tardy if they're late.

If you could choose how long the passing periods were, how long would you say(1-10 minutes)?

Would you have longer passing periods but a longer day or a shorter day with shorter passing periods?

Do you agree or disagree with the time the passing periods are currently?

  • I think we do not have enough time as of right now. If I have PE, I go change down the hall in the girls locker room, walk all the way back that long hall, then all the way upstairs to science. I feel as though I should have at least 4 minutes to go all the way across the school. With all the other students trying to get where they're going, hallways are chaos. We do not have enough time to rush through traffic, go to the bathroom, fill up water bottles, and get to class. Plus, if you have to talk to teachers or ask for help before class, you won't have time with everything going on in the hallways.

    • I went through the same thing last semester. I had PE and then had to go to science, this made it extremely difficult unless I was basically running to class every day. The hallways are always packed and getting through in a timely manner is not always an option. I agree with making the passing period time to 4 minutes, you get that extra minute to walk to class, socialize with friends, or ask a teacher for help. It's good to have a break every once and a while.

  • I do not like the passing period time currently. If im going downstairs and I want to go to the bathroom as well I would not have time to get to my class fast enough. I think that passing periods should be 5-7 mins. Thats a perfect time to talk to your teacher for help or go to the bathroom and go to your class.

    • I agree they should be lengthened, maybe not to 7 minutes. But I do think that they should be longer. In my opinion is it should be 4 minutes. This would give you enough time to get from class to class. I like what you said about having time to talk to your teacher before class. I agree that we need time in between class periods to talk to teachers. Especially if you do not want to stay after school and ask questions.

  • In my opinion passing periods should be 5 minutes. This way there would be more time to stop and talk to a teacher or go to the bathroom without having a tardy. I disagree with the time passing periods currently because I think it is not enought to have time without having to rush.

    • I think that most people do need to rush to class, even if their class is close to the class they just had. Trying to get through the hallways is always hard. Especially when everyone isn't going the same way. Trying to go the opposite way of traffic to get to your class takes a extra minute just because you are going the opposite way.

  • I feel that changing the passing periods to 4 minutes would give us time to use the restroom and get to our next class. I know about 5 students including myself that have a class all the way on the other side of the school and then they have to go all the way upstairs, this usually results in being tardy. The 3 minute passing periods are just not enough to get to your next class and use the restroom.

    • In my mind 4 minutes is the perfect time to be able to give us enough time to go to the restroom and also be able to get to our next class without getting a tardy. I also had a class way on the other side of the school with having to go upstairs. And I agree it's tough to get to class on time without being tardy.

  • I think the passing periods ashould be lengthened to 4-5 minutes. Longer passing periods would benefit the students greatly, and in the end, it doesn't matter if we get out a bit later. At least we'll be on time to class in the long run. Every day I hear students talking about how they don't like how short the passing periods are. And I couldn't agree more. Teachers always tell us to go to the bathroom during these 3 minute incriments and then proceed to get upset when we walk in late. 3 minutes is not enough time.

    • I agree that they should be lengthen, but I don't think that by adding one minute to them is going to make our day longer by much. If we add one minute to the current time of the passing periods we would have an extra 8 minutes added to the end of our day. This would have us getting out at around 3:10. I personally don't believe that it is that much more time added to the end of our day.
