How Can Embryonic Stem Cells Save Lives?

Embryonic stem cells can be a controversial topic. These cells are made by sperm clinics for couples with infertility issues. They do many trials to see which cell is the best. In most cases the other cells that are made are either discarded or given to other couples, depending on what the couple, of whom the sperm and the egg belong, want. Many couples decide to discard them.

Human embryonic stem cell(hESC) research asks if couples will donate. Stem cells have hope for more treatments for spinal cord injury, diabetes, and more diseases. For example, somebody with a spinal cord injury can never walk again… unless scientists figure out a way to use hESC for treatments! There are many benefits that these cells can have on people, and they are already making an impact.

Many pro-lifers believe that it is wrong. They believe that this embryonic cell(blastocyst), which is 5-7 days old, is human and has the same rights as a baby or even an adult. They believe it is immoral to use it for research, and that it is ultimately murder.

Many pro-life families can be for this. Most people don’t believe that a blastocyst is just a clump of cells. There is some middle ground that people are at. You can use these blastocysts for research but still be knowledgeable that this could potentially be a life.

I believe that hESC research should take place. If you think about it these blastocysts are going to be discarded anyway. So, why not use them if they are going to go to waste? This research can bring much-known life-changing discoveries with blastocysts, that is going to waste anyway. I am for the research and saving lives.

  • Great topic choice even if you didn't get a lot of comemnts. Well done Kara!

  • I think that this reasearch is definetly worth reasearching because it can help save lives and cure diseases wich is always a good thing. I also think that if any reasearch can help people stay healthyer than it is definetly worth reasearching and studying to help people.

  • I think that hESC reserach should be done because it could greatly benefit people in the futre. Even now, this type of research is helping people today. I'm not sure if there's anything someone could say that would change the views of pro-lifers. It's very hard to change the views of anyone, no matter what side of the argument they're on.

  • I think that it is a good idea and it could help save lifes. It will also help cure things that cannot be cured yet. If we start using it we can start curing more people and for people in the future it can help them stay healthier for their future.

    • I agree. The more we research the more we will discover and learn how to help more people.

  • I think it is a good idea because this research with the hESC can potentially save lives in the future and help people. Why not use them for good if they are going to be discarded anyways because even if they are seen as a living being already by some they were just going to be discarded anyways.

  • I totally agree that hESC reasearch should continue and it should also become more widespread. I believe if these cells are already going to go to waste, why not try to salvage them and possibly save somebody's life. Overall, I think this reasearch is very benifical and should continue to be studied, because it can help so many people and their lives.

    • I agree. This research can be so beneficial in so many ways.

  • As i have understood  hESC looks like a new step on medical world and inventions, like curing the stuff that we can not cure yet. I think we should give more budget and encourage this study.

  • I think it is a good idea and scientifics should study them and find a way to use them for people that need them. I think it is just cells and as you said they are still going to be discarded, so why not use them for people. I feel that this can change many people's lives.
