HOT TAKE: Should To Kill A Mockingbird be banned?

The use of racist language is one of the reasons To Kill a Mockingbird is getting banned all over America. Though this book teaches empathy and accepting one for their race, parents keep petitioning for the book to get banned. In my opinion, this book shouldn't be banned for the lessons it teaches. The language doesn't matter because it shows the kids who read it that you shouldn't judge people unfairly because of their race. Falsely accusing someone of a sexual crime is unfair and unjust. It can get someone in a lot of trouble, even if your father forces you to lie. I enjoy the book even through the use of swear words, racism, and false accusations.

Do you believe it's ok for this book to be banned?

Do you enjoy the book?

  • Great topic choice Kris. I do think your summary could be longer and you could have replied more frequently as well. -20-2 days late

  • I say that the book does not need to be banned because the lesson it teaches to the kids who read it. It tells a story about racism and life lessons and life choices for them to take. And to be banned because of the language is a little much there is way worse books for kids to read. Should it be required to be read in school could be another topic but to have it be banned everywhere is a little much.

  • i do not think that the book should be banned. It is an important topic to talk about. I have read many stories about teachers/students staying the nword in the book, which they shouldn't do, but i don't see why they can't just skip over the word and move on. The entire book shouldn't br banned because some people don't have common sense.

  • This book should not be banned. It's a compelling story that tells about racism very well. This is next level sensitive and I can't wait until they start banning every rap song ever. Just because their kid is getting exposed to a real issue in todays society doesn't mean you have to shelter them anymore.

  • I agree with you that the book shouln't get band because of the lesson it teaches people. People should ready this, its a good book and you can learn a lot from it. Yes it has some no nice things in it but is shouln't get band.

  • I personally think the book should continue being reachable for people to buy and read. I'm sure there are a lot of books out there that people think are daragatory and not right for the world we live in. But these books weren't published for the time that were in today.

  • I don't think that this book should be banned. It is not the only book that has racist language. I also think that people reading this can become informed of what used to go on in the past, and people can learn from others mistakes and not use racist language like the book does. I have read this and I really liked the book.

  • I agree that the book should not be banned becasue it has a good story line and teaches many lessons about life and grammar. I think if people are really getting offended that they could make a "clean" verson of the book without the terms that are used but personally I dont see the reason to bann the story.

  • I do not think this book should be banned. This isn't the only book that uses racist language. If it would get banned, so should a ton of other books. I did not get the chance to read the whole book. I started it and I thought it was really eye opening. It really makes you think about what life was like back then

  • If all books were banned that used racists or outdated ideas, there would be a lot of books that we would not be able to read. These types of books let us see into what the ideas of the time were. This lets us reflect and see how far we have come over the last 60 years.
