Hot Take Example-Back to College? Really??!!

So I helped move my daughter, Lexie, back to Buena Vista University on August 18 after much deliberation on her part on whether to go back or take classes from home online. She changed her mind at least five different times including on the day we were moving her in. Of course, going back to college means seeing and interacting with people from all over the state, country and world. It means scenes like this:

Iowa State actually tested all the students when they moved in and here were the results:

Not too bad, but other colleges like North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan State sent their students home after virus outbreaks amongst students within days or weeks of getting there. Hundreds of other colleges have opted to go online only for all students. I can of course, respect colleges that go completely online for at least this semester as colleges are quite different from high schools as they have students that come from all over the country and world. My issue is this-why are colleges having students come back to campus and then only offering one or two classes in person and the rest are online????!!!! What is the point of having students come back at all then? If you are that concerned, keep them home! Kids want to go back to college. College is fun. In person classes are generally better and harder to put off. So why put there safety in jeapordy if they aren't going to go full in-person. It's ridiculous and in my opinon, it's all about the $$$$$$$, which is sad.

So what are your thoughts about this? Do you think colleges should be all online, all in person or a combination? If you were a college student, what would you do and why?

  • I don't see why colleges are making students come back for one or two classes if the rest are online, and you'd think to make things easier they would move those in-person classes online or do zoom meetings instead. If a majority of the classes are online they should make it easier and move it to all online classes, and let the kids go back home if they want to. If I were a college student and I had online classes besides two, I would go back home and see if I can move those classes online.  Instead of worrying about the money they are making,  they should think about the safety of the kids and the trouble they are causing because of the few in-person classes they are requiring.

  • I think that college students should have the option to attend their classes either in person or online. The students should be able to base their decision off of their health conditions, as well as those of their friends and family. I believe that any college student should have the privelage to experience the variety of new activities that college offers. However, I do also think that students should get to take their courses online if they so choose. So, I think a combination would be the best solution. Personally, I would take my college classes in person if given the opportunity because as a young adult, my chances of being severely harmed by the virus are slim. I would choose to make my college experience as close to "normal" as possible.

  • i feel like they couldve called off the year, considering kids familys can go in debt from the cost of college. and some kids do benefit from online, its easy to cheat and pass classes because online is usually on your own schedule. face to face, traditional school, is dangerous in the middle of a pandemic, it ruins the experience of college too.

  • I would probably prefer staying online in a big public college to be safe and a lot of college students didn't stay around the area of the college during the quarantine. Staying home would allow for the students to be able to take the class where ever they want. Then, they wouldn't have to drive back and forth.

  • If I went to college I would probably stay home instead of sitting in my dorm room all day doing school work. I think that all classes should be in person, but that won't happen because the positive cases keep going up and its not as bad as people are saying it is.

  • Personally, I believe that colleges should at least give the option to bring back all stuents and have classes in-person because if they don't try, I feel like there is going to be no progress in finding out more about the virus. Obviously, if there is an outbreak, they can send the students home for the rest of the semester and go from there. In conclusion, I feel like making the students go to campus and do online classes all day is not the best solution.

  • If I went to college I would personally think that classes should be online for the first semester at least. It would be safer and they could switch back anytime they want. Also making them go back to campus just to take online classes would not be smart.

  • in my opinaian I think college students should attended online class just to be safe. if i was to choose to take online classes i would because i wouldn't wont to risk catching covid and putuing my faamily in that risk aloso.

  • I beleive it would be safest to not attend in person because of the large crowds and people coming from all over. but personally i would probably risk it and go in person just for the experiance. also to make it safer they could recomend masks and socail distancing.

  • I think that they Should go to class because it is a lot easier to study and take notes and it is easier to take a test.  Also they can try to keep them 6 feet away from each other and if they cant then they have a mask  on.they also could split the class in half like how we are doing now.
