Hot Take Example-Back to College? Really??!!

So I helped move my daughter, Lexie, back to Buena Vista University on August 18 after much deliberation on her part on whether to go back or take classes from home online. She changed her mind at least five different times including on the day we were moving her in. Of course, going back to college means seeing and interacting with people from all over the state, country and world. It means scenes like this:

Iowa State actually tested all the students when they moved in and here were the results:

Not too bad, but other colleges like North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan State sent their students home after virus outbreaks amongst students within days or weeks of getting there. Hundreds of other colleges have opted to go online only for all students. I can of course, respect colleges that go completely online for at least this semester as colleges are quite different from high schools as they have students that come from all over the country and world. My issue is this-why are colleges having students come back to campus and then only offering one or two classes in person and the rest are online????!!!! What is the point of having students come back at all then? If you are that concerned, keep them home! Kids want to go back to college. College is fun. In person classes are generally better and harder to put off. So why put there safety in jeapordy if they aren't going to go full in-person. It's ridiculous and in my opinon, it's all about the $$$$$$$, which is sad.

So what are your thoughts about this? Do you think colleges should be all online, all in person or a combination? If you were a college student, what would you do and why?

  • I think that college classes should be online because it would help decrease the spread of the Coronaviris.  It would also help the students so there would not be any strict rules of spacing and masks.  If I was in college right now I would take online classes because then I would not be at risk and then I would not have to go to big classroom full of students.

  • I think that colleges should all be online becaue of the fact that there are people from around the world there at the same time.

  • I think that everything should just be in person. Personally I am a better learner when it is in person and if it were online I would probably procastinate and not do it. Also not many young people are dying from covid and I think this could help spread herd immunity. Lastly I think those who are potentially more in danger to covid than others could choose to do online.

  • I think that the colleges should do a combination of both like we are in Harlan because it limits the time we see other students at school. If I was a college student I would want to go to classes in person because I like to go to class in person and not online. I think wearing a mask at school helps a little with the spread of the virus too.

  • Personally, I struggle learning online. I find it extremely hard to pay attention and even more difficult to find the motivation to do the assignments without going to class in person. I think that colleges are going online to please the part of the public that is concerned with the spread of covid. However, I think that they should offer all in person classes. The mortality rate of the virus is extremely low in young people. The majority of the students that attend colleges are young and healthy and in theory should be able to fight this virus without issue. There will always be exceptions, though. I think that they should give students the choice to attend online or in person based off of their individual needs. This would alow for those who are immunocompromised to be able to learn safely. If I was a college student, I would opt for in person classes because that is how I Iearn the best.

  • I think what we are doing in harlan with the hybrid learning is a pretty good system, just having the school split in two and having us social distance/wear mask is a system that schools should adopt.

  • If I was a college student I would want to go back to school to learn. It is a lot easier for me to learn in person, so being there would really help me out.  I understand though why some college's went all online or half and half. Some people might actually like it better going online, and they might continue to keep doing that. I also think that this is something that we will have ot face at some point and we can't keep avoiding it.

  • I think that they should do online for the first semester. With Covid being such a new virus and we are still trying to find a vaccine to help. In college you have a ton of students coming from all over the world. They should want to protect the childern and keep them home to be healthy

  • I feel like if students had the choice to either do online or go in person is their choice. Some students rather do school from home for their saftey, but some can't do the online so they choose to go back. If the teachers give them rules and guidelines for what they had to follow it shouldn't be an issue. I had the choice to either do online or go back in person and i chose to come back because I need the in person learning.

  • Going online fully is hard on some students. Most college students need hands-on experience. This gives them a better understanding of what they are studying. The amount of money students are paying for college they should be able to be in the classroom. As long as the professor has guidelines and rules for us then I wouldn't be scared with being in the classroom.
