Hot Take Example-Back to College? Really??!!

So I helped move my daughter, Lexie, back to Buena Vista University on August 18 after much deliberation on her part on whether to go back or take classes from home online. She changed her mind at least five different times including on the day we were moving her in. Of course, going back to college means seeing and interacting with people from all over the state, country and world. It means scenes like this:

Iowa State actually tested all the students when they moved in and here were the results:

Not too bad, but other colleges like North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan State sent their students home after virus outbreaks amongst students within days or weeks of getting there. Hundreds of other colleges have opted to go online only for all students. I can of course, respect colleges that go completely online for at least this semester as colleges are quite different from high schools as they have students that come from all over the country and world. My issue is this-why are colleges having students come back to campus and then only offering one or two classes in person and the rest are online????!!!! What is the point of having students come back at all then? If you are that concerned, keep them home! Kids want to go back to college. College is fun. In person classes are generally better and harder to put off. So why put there safety in jeapordy if they aren't going to go full in-person. It's ridiculous and in my opinon, it's all about the $$$$$$$, which is sad.

So what are your thoughts about this? Do you think colleges should be all online, all in person or a combination? If you were a college student, what would you do and why?

  • I believe that if there is a class where if you would be there in person would help a student understand more should be taught in-person. Otherwise I think that classes that don't need that attention could be taught online.

  • I think it's just a waste of money and time to go live in dorms if you only have one or two classes in person. I think it would be better if you do online classes because than it doesn't cost that much money and you can do it from home so you are with your family.

  • I think that it would be a waste of time going and living in the dorms when your only going to one class and staying i your dorm the rest. It doesn't make any sense to me. I think that everyone should be able to go to classes. If I were in college I would just stay at home and do everything online instead.

  • I personally would choose to go online fully. Although it's a tough adjustment from in-person to online, it would be much safer and more cost effective. I think a combination could definitely work for some majors, for example my sister does most of her work online and about once a week goes to the school for lab activities. However, I can't justify schools offering dorms to students because of monetary and safety reasons.

  • I think if college students don't need to be in class, they shouldn't have to. But what about the students who learn better in the classroom? They should be able to go, but maybe make an appointment to do so. I think they should do a combination so that at least all students have an opportunity to get the chance to feel out the way it worksfor them, then make a decision to decide weather they want to do online, or in school, or even maybe a combination of both.

  • In my opinion it should all be online for at least 1 semester. That way hopefully covid just goes away. Of course I know it isnt as simple as that, but there is no denying that it is a lot safer to stay home doing classes than to go back to school with a whole bunch of people. So if it does die down a lot more i think we could slowly start bringing people in, for instance like here one day half the school goes the next the other half does. My answer to the last question would be like i already said, online for now, in school slowly later.

  • Online classes are inneffective for me, and I feel unmotivated and unable to learn when I have no obligation to go anywhere, so I would prefer to go back completely in person, however, I do agree that it would be better to not go back at all than to risk another setback by bringing everyone back together just to have them learn online. The way many colleges are doing this makes no sense.

  • I belive students should have about half of there classes in person and the other half online. Maybe lean to a little more online then more of there in class days could be days where they could be doing labs or taking test. If the cases do spike jurrasticly then I think they should do online.

  • I feel that students should go back full time or have it all on online. I don't think some of it should be online and some in person it should be one or another. I think that for everyones saftey colleges should go all online. I would go online because I want to stay safe and the is a lot of people that go to college which increases the chances of getting Covid-19.

  • I like the idea of in person and some online classes bacuse some classes are just eiser to learn in if you are ther in person. I also like the online because if you dont have to be in person then what is the point in going in person when you would be safer in your dorm.
