So I helped move my daughter, Lexie, back to Buena Vista University on August 18 after much deliberation on her part on whether to go back or take classes from home online. She changed her mind at least five different times including on the day we were moving her in. Of course, going back to college means seeing and interacting with people from all over the state, country and world. It means scenes like this:
Iowa State actually tested all the students when they moved in and here were the results:
Not too bad, but other colleges like North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan State sent their students home after virus outbreaks amongst students within days or weeks of getting there. Hundreds of other colleges have opted to go online only for all students. I can of course, respect colleges that go completely online for at least this semester as colleges are quite different from high schools as they have students that come from all over the country and world. My issue is this-why are colleges having students come back to campus and then only offering one or two classes in person and the rest are online????!!!! What is the point of having students come back at all then? If you are that concerned, keep them home! Kids want to go back to college. College is fun. In person classes are generally better and harder to put off. So why put there safety in jeapordy if they aren't going to go full in-person. It's ridiculous and in my opinon, it's all about the $$$$$$$, which is sad.
So what are your thoughts about this? Do you think colleges should be all online, all in person or a combination? If you were a college student, what would you do and why?
Replies
If i was in college i would want to do a combination, only because its better for me to learn in person. I would also have more time to finish school work that i havent finished yet and I wouldnt always have to wear a mask everydayy.
I think since a lot of colleges are having students going just part time, they should move to full time. Even though there will be higher chances of infection rates student participation will be higher. Along with that a lot of students are just over being stuck at home with there parents, and they just want to see their friends or people in genral.
If I was in collage I would choose go in person because i would think if they are letting people go back to their dorms then they should have all in person. I think it would be their personal choice though on whether to go back to school.
If I was in collage I would hate online so I think if there letting kids move back into there doorms, they should do face to face, in peron classes, instead of online.
If I were in college I would want to go back in person but that probably isn't the safest option so I think doing online and some in person classes would be the best option.
I guess it depends on how many cases are around each college, but if there is a few cases then I think that it should be online. If I was a college student I would prefer to be online because I don't want to get the virus.
I think they should stick between either completely online or in person. I think it'd be safer to do all online, but it would be better to just do one or the other. If it were not about money, I feel as though it'd all be online, as it should be.
i dont think they should have to pay the full price if they are only going to show up for one in person class but i get where they are coming from because they have to charge them for staying in like the dorm rooms because they bought it on campus
I think students with no underlying conditions should go completely in person, but students with underlying conditions should go completely online. I think it should be the students choice. I don't think colleges should go half and half because it is unfair to the student.
I think that if I were a college student that I would want to go all in person. I think that if we are ever going to get used to this virus some people are going to have to get it and we are just going to have to deal with it. People just need to get over fear and be willing to take the risk. Especially people with no underlying conditions.
