Hot Take Example-Back to College? Really??!!

So I helped move my daughter, Lexie, back to Buena Vista University on August 18 after much deliberation on her part on whether to go back or take classes from home online. She changed her mind at least five different times including on the day we were moving her in. Of course, going back to college means seeing and interacting with people from all over the state, country and world. It means scenes like this:

Iowa State actually tested all the students when they moved in and here were the results:

Not too bad, but other colleges like North Carolina, Notre Dame and Michigan State sent their students home after virus outbreaks amongst students within days or weeks of getting there. Hundreds of other colleges have opted to go online only for all students. I can of course, respect colleges that go completely online for at least this semester as colleges are quite different from high schools as they have students that come from all over the country and world. My issue is this-why are colleges having students come back to campus and then only offering one or two classes in person and the rest are online????!!!! What is the point of having students come back at all then? If you are that concerned, keep them home! Kids want to go back to college. College is fun. In person classes are generally better and harder to put off. So why put there safety in jeapordy if they aren't going to go full in-person. It's ridiculous and in my opinon, it's all about the $$$$$$$, which is sad.

So what are your thoughts about this? Do you think colleges should be all online, all in person or a combination? If you were a college student, what would you do and why?

  • With the circumstances that we are facing today, collages should be completly online. There is hundreds of students and with a population that big it is hard to keep control of everyone. With the reopening of colleges the virus could spread easier which would led to another shut down. The collages main topic of importance should be the students safety. With online you can assure their safety at home and they can continue to learn.

  • In my opinion, the students should either go completely online, or completely in class. If you're paying for the college classes just to take only one actually face to face, they should just switch to all online and not give the option of being in class.

  • In my opinion it is better for collages to have full classes online , because it could help students save money and stay safe. if I were a college student I would just stay home to keep my self safe and not spend my money for a few classes.

  • This is a very hard issue to decide on. There are some pros to being full online but also come cons many students may cheat, or may not even login to do the work or zoom calls that are going on through the day. But if you go to school in person you have a chance of getting the virus and then spreading it throughout the whole campus. A very tough descion for people in charge. Personally I would think you would almost have to go online to limit the spred and to keep people safe.

  • I do not think they should do half and half. I think they should either go all in or not go at all. It is a waste to spend all the money of living there to only go to a single or few classes. If i were a college student I would stay at home and save the money. Theres no point in going to just one class.

  • I think it should all be online if students are not going to be attending very many classes. It's a waste of money to live at college if you could've had the same classes and not spending the money actually going.

  • I'm not sure which I would prefer becuase I learn better when I'm in a class room but I would also like to be able to stay near my family and freinds, also I think it would be cheaper. Otherwise I think colleges will be a hot spot for covid and will spread very fast. Especially, if people don't sanitize or wear their mask. Also since students need to go out more to eat out and get groceries.

  • I think they should do together in person, because some students have a hard time learning online than other students. They would just have to take the precaution if they would choose or not. I would want in person instead of both or online, because it's easier learning with the teacher right in front of you in college.

  • If I was a college student, I would personally go back in person. As a person who learns way better in the classroom and not very good in person, I think that would be my best chance at passing all my classes. However, I think that is a risky choice because you have the chance to catch the covid. I think going back to college and taking classes in person in the best choice for me if I was a college student.

  • If I was going to be in collge I would want all my classes to be online instead of going to school for one class. It also costs a lot of money for dorms or apartments and some college kids don't have money to pay for that and if they live far away from home they aren'tgonna drive home every week cause that costs money too. On the other hand it depends what you are going to school for if its a thing you need to learn in class like machinig, cosmetologists, etc. then you would need to be there for some things. So I think that some classes shoud be in school but if they don't need to be then they don't be so they don't spread increase the cases.
