Hot Take - BLM (Black Lives Matter)

So, I am probably cause a lot of controversy about this discussion, but I believe controversy is a good thing in the right amount. I am tired of hearing all of this Black Lives Matter. The riots, protests, all of it, I'm tired of it.

Now as we all know the time the BLM first really started was when Derek Chauvin (The police officer) killed George Floyd, an African-American man. BLM first truly started in July of 2013. Now there was a lot of controversy on this use of police brutality, but when I wrestle with my brother, he says something that will get me off of him i.e. I have to pee. When I let him up he goes right back to fighting. Now from this example who can say if George Floyd was faking it in the moment, clearly he wasn't afterwards, but how did Mr. Chauvin? He didn't know. BUT I'M TIRED OF IT! People don't realize that George Floyd was previously a criminal! Yes Mr. Chauvin was way too hard on him. But still you won't go easy on a ex-con.

So what are your thoughts on BLM, do you think Derek Chauvin was in the right, or wrong?

  • Alex,

Great topic choice but I do think you could have expressed your opinion a bit better than you did. Take your time writing it as you know it will be a controversial topic so you want to be sure your thoughts arer written perfectly. Don't wait until an hour before it is due to get his type of topic done.

Also, be sure to keep commenting throughout the entire week.

  • How dare you? Yes, it can seem repetitive and daunting, but Chauvin murdered George Floyd. You cannot kneel on a man's neck for eight minutes and expect him not to die. Even if he assumed he was faking, as you say, common sense tells you that if you constrict a person's airways for over five minutes, they will have quite horrendous side effects if they do not end up dead. It can definetly be a bit much at times. Some of these riots are just ridiculous, but people want a change. People are fighting for a change. Although it can be a lot, something is happening.

  • I believe that black lives matter, but so do everyone elses lives. Many people are bashing cops saying all cops are bad, but I think there are good cops also. I do think what the officer did was maybe a little unnessesary and he could have handled the situation a little differently. All the protest and riots that were, and still are, going on may have gotton a little out of hand.

  • The police officer was not the cause of George Flyods death because there was proven fact that there was a drug called fentynal ( a large amount ). THat is deadly to someone and that was why George FLyd died. Yes that cop did not have to be as rough with him, but yes your right he was a criminal as well.

  • In my opinion, black lives do matter as well as everyone elses in this matter. I think that officer chauvin could have settled things better than he did. I also think that all these riots are too much and are getting out of hand. People can protest in an easier way than causing chaos around the States.

  • I don't agree that Chauvin was in the right putting his knee on Floyds head because there are other ways of restraint, but I don't agree with BLM being against cops in general. Just because a few cops are bad does not mean all of them are bad. I think some of the protestors have taken it way to far there is no need to be destroying property and looting.

  • I think some people have taken it way to far but black lives do matter but so do white and every other race. yes, it is true that African-Americans have had it MUCH harder than everyone else but I don't see anything about white lives matter when more white people die when police use lethal force the black people.

  • I think it is slightly insensitive and extremely dismissive to say you're "tired of it." If just hearing about the movement for a few months makes you tired, imagine how black people feel having to deal with sytemic racism for centuries. Also, the excuse that George Floyd had a criminal record is irrelevant; Derek Chauvin had zero knowledge of that past when he murdered him (and yes, I purposely use the word murder.) Even if Derek Chauvin was aware of Floyd's criminal past, a police officer has isn't in charge of murdering someone and a past charge means nothing. It's the justice system's job to order an execution, not a police officer. BLM shouldn't be a controversial topic. Take some time to consider what BLM is saying. Black. Lives. Matter. With that statement, black people aren't asking for an advantage, they aren't even asking for equality; they're asking to simply matter. They're asking to be given a chance to live and not be murdered for their skin color. If a person hears the phrase black lives matter and their first instinct is to argue against that, then they really take a step back and consider why they dont agree with that statement. There isn't anything to disagree with if you're not a racist.  Derek Chauvin is a murderer.

  • BLM is a movement against police brutality. Police officers are trained NOT to kill criminals during an arrest. Using George Floyds past is people's way of excusing his murder. He couldn't BREATHE. His murderer knew he wasn't faking it. When I used to play fight with my sister and one of us said something, etc. ouch that hurts, hey stop. We would immediately stop and check to see if we were alright. Black lives matter doesnt mean that black lives are above us, it means that they deserve the rights they've been stripped of for hundreds of years. If you think you're tired of hearing about BLM, imagine being black.  George Floyd wasn't in a wrestling match he wanted to win. He was in a fight for his life, and he lost. We peacefully protested so many times. I have tons of videos of people at peaceful protests getting tear-gassed and shot with rubber bullets. Just recently a little white boy with autism was shot. The police are the problem. Derek Chauvin is a murder and deserves to be in prison. Instead of worrying about the looting and rioting, start worrying about the lives being taken around us everyday by the police.

Know their names. Rayshard Brooks, 27.  Daniel Prude, 41. George Floyd, 46. Breonna Taylor, 26. Atatiana Jefferson, 28. Aura Rosser, 40. Stephon Clark, 22. Botham James, 26. Philando Castille, 32. Alton Sterling, 37. Michelle Cusseaux, 50. Freddie Gray, 25. Fanisha Fonville, 2o. Eric Garner, 43. Akai Gurley, 28. Gabriella Nevarez, 22. Tamir Rice, 12.  Michael Brown, 18. Tanisha Anderson, 37. These are just a few of the black people killed by the police.

  • I believe that ALL LIVES MATTER not just black lives. So instead of making a group about how black lives matter, make a group that says ALL LIVES MATTER. I think it was in the right for Derek Chauvin to do what he was doing because George was resisting. George could've simply put his hands behind his back.
