Homeless Sleepout

People in Des Moines, Iowa spent a night and slept outside as a homeless person would do. This event is held each year in memory of Reggie Kelsey. He was a homeless boy, slipping after leaving foster care, and was found dead by the Des Moines River in 2001. Last year they raised $130,000 from this event. For everyone that participates in this, it is a reminder of how grateful we should be for what we have in our life.

1) Would you be willing to do this event, where you sleep outside for one night? Why or why not?

2) What do you think about this event?

  • Good job Lexie! Be sure to hyperlink to your story though.

  • I would sleep outside for one night. This is such a simple task and you would have to have a very good reason to not be able to do this. This event is a very good idea as it shows people what the homeless have to deal with.

  • If it can help someone why not, it's easy to do.

  • Yes if I was with friends, because it would be fun and it is for a good cause. I think it is kinda cool and it's a good idea!

    • I think it would be fun with friends too, and it is for a good cause so why not try it!

  • Yes, I think that it would be for a good cause, and it would make people more grateful for what they have.

  • This, is great event, in my opinion more people should help the homeless. I would wanna sleep under a street light, for the slight significance of warmth.

    • I think it is a great event too, I also think there should be more done for the homeless!

  • Yeah I think I would be willing. I think it's a good way to raise awareness and help out the homeless.

  • I'd be willing to do this event, but in doing it, it doesn't stimulate what living on the streets is really like. Make the event in December, without letting them have phones, money, or sufficient clothing. Nobody really knows how awful being homeless is.
