Hollywood Actor Dead, Fortune Goes Not to Family...

On February 5, 2020 Kirk Douglas died at the age of 103. He was a famous actor and his career started in 1946 and lasted till 2008 (62 years). The total amount of money that he had was about US $61 million, when he died and he decided to put about US $50 million to charity. One of them is a “Children’s Hospital Los Angeles”. He has three sons and a wife but it is not proofed where the remaining US $10 million went. It is very clear that not much of the money actually went to his sons which was not a big deal for Michael Douglas the oldest one of three, because he was a well paid actor too, but we do not know what actually is happening to the others.

Do you think it was right from Kirk Douglas to give so much money to charity and so less (if) to his family and why?

- In my opinion it was right to give so much money to organisations who really need it, because they can use every help they get and it can improve many people's lives. I can’t imagine that Kirk Douglas would treat his family less than worth it and I’m sure he would have given them more, if they’d really need it, but I guess he was sure they’d be alright with what they have.

How would you split up your fortune if you would have as much as he had, would you give something to charity or keep it in your family,...?

- I think I would definitely give something to charity and I think the family should not just depend on what I would have earned so they also should work and try to reach something on their own.

  • Great job Finja!!

  • Kirk Douglas did a very positive thing to want to give $50 million to charity. If the $10 million went to his family, that's still a ton of money for them. If I had his fortune, I would probably do something along the lines of what Douglas did and give some to various charities that would benefit from the donations.

  • I think that I would do about the same thing he did, if I was as rich and had as much wealth as Kirk Douglas. I'm sure he had many houses and cars that the family could have and sell if they wanted, but the money in my bank would mainly go somewhere that it was needed like charity.

  • I think that it is very nice of him to give away almost all of his wealth away to a good cause. A member in his family definitely does not need 60 million dollars and they probably would not use that much of it during their lifetime, so I think it is nice it went to a place where it was really needed.

  • I think its okay to donate a lot of money to charities as long as they are legitimate and not a bad organization. It definitely shouldn't be taken lightly and should be researched heavily. This is just my opinion in general, I'm not accusing Kirk Douglas of not researching enough. I don't have a problem with his actions.

I would probably split my money 60/40 with the money for my family being the first number. Above all, I want my family to be well taken care of for all the years to come.

  • I believe it was the right thing for him to do. Their family is probably already well-off, so they didn't need that much money in the first place. I agree with you that Kirk Douglas would treat his family well, and I’m sure he would have given them more, if they’d really need it. If I had that much money, I would definitely give some to charity and some to my family.

  • I think giving more to charity is the right thing to do. Unless his family needs money badly, the charity needs more money than his family. They probably have a lot of money anyway. I would give half to charity and half to my family and my closest friends. Even giving (30 million) half would definitely still be enough.

    • I think it is very nice of you to even think of your family, you are the first one here in the comments who actually thought about them. Although I think it can cause problems, depending how many or how close friends you have, because fame can create many fake friends and i think you really have to be careful.

  • Yes, I think it was the right thing to do, his family has plenty of money already. So why not just give it to charity and help the people in need of the money. I would definitely have my grandkids bonds for collage so they wouldnt have to pay for that and give them some money for when they get older. and set up the rest of my family first, then if I had any left over money i'd give it to charity or something.

    • I would assume compared to how many children you are planning to have, you could pay the  future and pay for college easly and still have a lot of money to share. I still believe that it would make sense for the kids to not get everything sponsored so they learn how to deal with bills and money so you don’t pay the whole college or what do you think about it?
