In 1938, Adolf Hitler was named Time Magazine's Man of the Year. This was before the war obviously, but I think it's insane how someone can be this popular in a positive way and turn it negative.

Time defines the designation "Person of the Year" as follows: “The person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse.”
Hitler isn't the only "crazy" person to get the award. Josef Stalin is "Man of the Year" the year after. The 2011 Person of the Year was "The Protestor". Here is a list of past winners:
