Valentine’s Day occurs every February 14. Across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the meaning and history of Valentine’s Day, from the ancient Roman ritual of Lupercalia that welcomed spring to the card-giving customs of Victorian England. Where did Valentine's Day originate from? The history of the holiday and the story of its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Still others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl possibly his jailor’s daughter who visited him during his confinement.

Troy,
Great topic choice but much of this is plagiarized.
I think Valentines Day is very lovey and that what it's about. I think we should have school of for every holiday because we obvisouly celebrate these days and holidays for a reason. We should at least have that day off of that holiday since it's a haoliday.
I think we should have school off on valentines day not because it is important but because we need more days off school and it would eb a perfect day to have off. I think that they should cancel school on valentines day so that kids could have more free time.
i agree with you that this would be a perfect day to have school off and just stay home with your family
I like valentines day because it is a special day to go have a fun day with your loved ones i think we should get the day off because we can go out and do things with them and show them how much we appariciate them. Yes we can show loved ones love everyday but it would be great to have a day off work and school to go on a date or go shopping or something
I think that Valentine's day is a great day to show love and appreciation to your friends, family, and significant other... Although it is a very special holiday, I don't think that it is necessary to have the day off because you don't really need a special day to show love to your family when you can show it daily if that's what you wanted.
i love valentines day its a great holiday to show love to people and I think we don't need to have it off
I think that we should have the day off for valentines day because then we could spend the day with the people we love and have fun. I think we should have more days off for this kinds of things because we don't get a lot of days off so I think that we could have more days off for these kinds of things.
i agree that we need more day off because we dont get that much time to ourselves except the weekend
I like valentines day because why not. Another is that its my birthday. Valentines days is a day taht you can fully show how much someone means to you. I do feel like that we should get that day off, because it is a major day in some cases, but it might just be me.
