History of Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th and ends on October 15th. This was created to celebrate the declaration of independence from Spain for Latin American countries. They declared independence on September 15th, 1821. These countries consist of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Both Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days September 16th and September 18th which falls on the 31 days this month has.

Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hipanic Heritage Week in 1968 until 1988. In 1988, Senator Paul Simon submitted a similar bill that passed Congress and was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on August 17th 1988. On September 14th 1989, President George H.W. Bush became the first president to declare the 31 days from September 15th to October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month.

I think that Hispanic Heritage Month is a very important month to people from Latin America that live here in the United States. I'm glad that there is a month to celebrate their declarations for independence. Many people like to clebrate this month by trying food from Latin American countries or by playing games that they play.  I think that President Ronald Reagan made a good decision switching this holiday from a week to a month.

Questions:

Do you think there should be a Hispanic Heritage Month? If not, do you feel the same about Black History Month in February?

What are you thoughts on people of hispanic heritage having a month to elebrate their roots/culture?

  • Great topic choice and well done overall Dixi! Glad you did this topic and helping me discuss it in class.

  • I think that being able to freely celebrate and learn about our culture, enjoy our traditions, and be proud of who we are is extremely important when we are so far away from our countries. Also, I think black history month is extremely important since black people haven't been given the representation they deserve, having a whole month dedicated to learning about black history and listening to their experiences is amazing. Since the US houses a vast amount of people from all around the world having these specific months to learn about them is extremely important.

  • I think that there should definitely be a Hispanic Heritage month. I think this because it is a great way to show others about their culture and roots. Having them share their culture and roots is soomething great and everyone should appreciate. Even though people may argue that a lot of other cultures don't have this month, I still think it is fair that they get to have a month.

  • I agree, I think Hispanic Heritage Month is very important. I think its a great thing its a whole month to celebrate. I also agree that even if they were born and raised in the US they should definitely have the right to celebrate their culture and roots.

    • It is a very great thing that there is a whole month to celebrate hispanic backgrounds. I also think that people that were born in the US should be able to celebrate their culture. This can help them be more respected and can help people learn a lot more.

  • I agree that there should be a hispanic heritage month. I feel like it is very important to celebrate with family and friends and learn about the hispanic culture and traditions. People in the U.S. come from all over and I think that it is very cool that everyone can celebrate their roots.

    • I also feel like it is important for people from these countries to celebrate with their family and friends. It also helps people learn and respect their cultures. I think it's nice that the US has something to honor people from these countries.

  • This is a very interesting topic. Thank you for expressing your opinion. I think that Hispanic Heritage month should be more appreciated. Help people get in touch with their roots and feel more comfortable being who they are. I don’t want anyone to be ashamed for their ethnicity that is something to be proud of and I support it 100%.

    • I also think that is should be more appreciated because there is not many people that even know that it exists. I agree that people should get in touch with their roots and feel more comfortable about being who they are and they should not be ashamed about it.

  • I think this is a very is very important and should be respected. I believe people should be able to celebrate their culture and country's freedom.  I think this will help people learn more about their cultural background. It will also help people learn more about the important aspects of the people all around the United States.
