Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is regarded by many as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. While not a federal holiday, several states observe the day after Thanksgiving as a holiday, which means many state and school employees have the day off. Therefore, the number of potential shoppers greatly increases.
The term "Black Friday" was first used on Sept. 24, 1869, when two investors, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, drove up the price of gold and caused a crash that day. The stock market dropped 20% and foreign trade stopped. While Gould and Fisk lost money, they were able to continue on in their business ventures.
Their plan depended on keeping government gold off the market, which the manipulators arranged through political influence. When Pres. Ulysses S. Grant finally became aware of the scheme, he ordered $4,000,000 of government gold sold on the market. This broke the corner and, in the ensuing panic, the rest of the market as well. It hurt the economy and the reputation of the Grant administration.

Yes I think that Grant should have known about the situation sooner, then he could have done something about it eairler. If something happened like that today it wouldnt be good I think there would be mass panic and we would all suffer.
I think Ulysses Grant should have been more aware of the situation a lot sooner. If this would happen today i think it would be not good and probably really bad. I have heard that there is a lot of crime on Black Friday but it is also not that bad because prices are cheaper.
