Heated Floors and Five Star Meals in Prison?

Prison in Norway is much different than what we think of prison as. They treat the inmates as normal people and assosiate with them constantly. These inmates live in what look like college dorms. They have a desk, nice beds, their own heating and cooling thermostat, and nice showers. Many of them are living better than people outside of prison. Norway officials say that they eat lunch with the inmates every day and they go about back and forth talking about thier day and what's going on in thier lives. The officers think of the inmates as normal people and they don't look at the bad in them. The see all of the good and expect them to realize how good life can be. The inmates can go play video games and eat pizza whenever they want. They can go play sports or with animals if they want to. They have so many oprotunities while in prison it is unbelievable.

North Dakota took a trip to Norway to see how they are doing thing. They believe that what Norway is doing is working and want to possible start this kind of program in North Dakota. Many people in the public feel otherwise. They don't understand why when someone commits a crime they get treated like they are on top of the world. Some live better than people outside of prison and many think that they are not learning to be better people in society but they are just dependant on the jail now. This may cause many of the prisoners to get into bad situations when released and they may commit more crimes just to go back to jail and eat and play video games whenever they want.

Do you think other prisons in the United States will continue with this and start treating inmates this way? Why?

Yes, I do think htat many other prisons in the U.S. will do this seeing as it can cause many benifits to the prisoners and teach them how nice life could be when they get out and the potential of life itself

What is your opinion on the living of these inmates?

I think it is a creative idea but Im not sure how benificial it will end up being

If someone were to have committed a crime against your family, such as stealing or murder, how would you feel about the prisoners living conditions?

I would not like hearing that they live a better life than the average person. I wouldn't think that they are learning a good enought lesson by getting treated with whatever they want whenever they want it. It is amost like a good think to go to prison for them.

  • Good job Grace!

  • Yes, I think potentially other prisons in the United States will continue with this and starting treating inmates this way to show them how great life could actually be. I think it's a good way to make them more positive, but I feel like it would cause them to just want to commit more crimes so they can enjoy free pizza and playing video games whenever they want.

  • 1) Yes becuase it could show them what they could really be living anf make them behave better so they could get out.

    2) I don't think the inmates will learn so much from this idea.

    3) I don't think they should be treated nicley because they did something bad.

  • 1- I don't know if they will do to the way that meany see criminals in the United States; however, I do think that prisons over here should be much more like those prisons. 2- I think that for the most part it's a better solution to what we have. But I don't like the fact that they live better than the average person, the point is to punish and rehabilitate not make them like prison and connect negative input to positive out put. 3- I wouldn't be too happy about it. Like I said the point is to punish and rehabilitate them, so they learn from their mistake and are then ready to go back into society. Not make them think that the crime was a positive thing in their life.

  • I don't think the U.S. will pass this because people go to jail for a reason, whether it's committing murder or stealing something, it just wouldn't be fair that they would be living better than the average person. Also, I think once they get out of jail they're going to want to go back because they liked how they were being treated, so I think there would be more crimes across the country, just so people can go back to jail if they don't have the greatest life.

  • I think President Trump will NOT allow that kind of posh treatment of prisoners so no I don't think prisons in the US will start to treat people like this. I think it is a good experiment to try; however, I don't know if I agree with the treatment of them. I think someone committing harsher crimes would get punished more severely. I don't think they get treated like the rest of the prisoners.

    • I do agree that President Trump will probably not allow this kind fo treatment in prisons. I think he is smart enough to realize that many consequences and affects of this will backfire. I also agree that the harsher the crime committed, the harsher the prison environment should be for them.

  • I think that if these prisons work in some states then other states will more than likely start doing the same thing. I only problem is that it would cost lots of money that the government does not have. I think that it is a good idea if it used for the right reasons because if some inmates start to do crimes on purpose than something with the jail will have to change.

    • Yeah, it is kind of like a chain thing and if only a couple states had it, the regulations wouldn't be fair for the prisoners. It will end up costing us a lot more for taxes because this would be the only way to fund it. Some of the inmates do deserve this, but there are many out ther that do not desrve to be treated this well for the crimes committed.

  • I don't think they will, because like you said, they might get too used to it in the prison and want to go back. If that happens then the U.S Government is paying for food for people that are purposely there. Also, the homless people would get word of this and there would be an increase of crimes because they want to have good living conditions.

Other than that, I think that its a good idea, but maybe just for people serving life terms, just so they don't get out and go right back in.

I would be upset if they purposely killed a family member, but if it was in a car crash or something then the person doesn't deserve to be treated like a dog and should get some of these luxuries.
