Gun Buyback Program

Springfield's recent gun buyback program and similar programs across the country are prime examples of the use of gun buybacks on the street. Shotguns, rifles, and handguns were turned in to authorities in exchange for a $50 or $25 gift card from Lt. Brian Beliveau. In New Jersey according to the standard prices set for the buyback, residents will be paid: $25 for Inoperable Firearms & BB/Pellet Guns, $125 for Rifles and Shotguns, $200 for Handguns, $250 for Assault Weapons Law enforcement firearms experts will be on hand at each location to assist with the valuation and securing of turned-in weapons. Basically, the same program is happening in NYC called the Cash for Guns Program. Through the NYPD they are offering $200 per every gun turned in to the police. The County of San Mateo had three successful events in 2018-2019, taking a total of 1,254 firearms collected. If I had a choice if this happened or not I would not let it happen. Considering that owning a gun is an American right.

Do you think that the government should offer money for guns?

Would you give up your gun and ammo to the government for these prices?

What would you do to change this?

  • Good topic choice Brayden! Overall your sumary is brief and you could have replied to more comments. Glad you got it done!! -10 one day late

  • I think the government is trying to do a good thing but executing it wrongly. I feel this will get abused when you offer money for turning a gun in. As if you are aloud to carry a firearm , but if this policy was just for people who aren't aloud to carry a gun and have one then i'd be okay with it. I would also ask for way more money to give them up.

  • Yes, I think this is a smart way to help lower crime. Many times criminals do harm due to the fact that they have nothing to live for. If they are offered money for their guns, I think sometimes it would lower the chances of crime dealing with guns.

  • I think that offering money for guns is a good way for police to lower crime by offering cash for them. However, I think it's dumb if a non-criminall turns their gun in for cash because then they can't defend themselves in times of need. I would give my guns and ammo up for double of what I paid for them. I would change it so that only criminals had to turn them in and get more cash.

  • I don't think the government should offer money for guns. I think it might be a good thing because it will encourage people to not own guns, but then again I don't think guns are absolutely terrible. I also don't think it would be a good thing because these people have their rights and trying to bribe them, I don't think, is the right way to go.

  • I think if someone wants to sell their guns they should be able to be bought from the gun dealers. Because they know what to do and how to sell guns already. If the government wants to buy guns back many people probably would if they don't use them. I would not give the government my guns and ammo.

  • I think the government doing this is helpful as it is a form of gun control. If you're willing to give up your gun for 200 dollars, you probably didn't need a gun that bad. THe buyback program is probably a way to help filter irresponsible gun owners. Gun control is needed, and I think this is a good start.

  • I don't really think it's a big deal. It would be different if the government was sending people to your house and forcibly taking your gun from you. It's your choice whether or not you want to or not for money. The second amendment isn't being infringed upon.

  • Yes, I think they should raise the price that they are giving these people. I personally, know I wouldn't sell my gun to the governemnt especially for these prices.  I think the government should deffinatly raise the price for these guns. They would get a lot more guns if they did raise the price.

    • Agreed for the most part. Raising the price will affect the cost. I think they should stop with gun control in general. We don't need any more small restrictions any more. that just leads to big restrictions in the end.
