Gun buyback program

Lots of people are for the Gun buyback program. The gun buyback program is basically the government trying to buy YOUR guns for a certain amount of money. It started in Philidelphia from 1968-1974, there was only 544 guns bought during those years. Baltimore tried to do the same and staged a 3 month long buyback program in 1974. They were offering a $50 a gun payment. Baltimores buy back program took in 13,400 rifles and 8,400 handguns in 1974. Gun homicides and assaults actually rose during the to month program but the crime rate increased. In 1994 researchers looked at the 1992 buyback in  Washington where 1,172 firearms were gave up. In the 2020 election candidates Cory booker, Bernie sanders, and Beto O' Rourke, have indicated support for gun buyback programs. In 2017 the most deaths from firearms are 59% from suicide, 36% from assult, 1% law enforcement,1% accidently, .85% undeitermined. So in the 2020 election alot of the democratic canidates were all in for the buy back program to try to help stop those deaths happening from firearms.

In my opionin this buyback program is a absoulute joke. The government is not thinking about the farmers/ranchers that have cattle and need to protect there calves. The right of having the 2nd ammendment is our right, the peoples right. Having this buy back program is invading our right. We should be able to own guns, and have the rights to buy them and bare arms. The gun buy back program is a terrible idea in my opinon people work hard to own guns because of the expense that it cost to own a gun. Keeping your family safe is important and owning a gun makes you feel so much safer.

Do you think they should try the gun buy back program again?

Do you think it is our right to own these guns?

What would you do if someone tried to take away your guns?

    • I agree with you that taking guns away from a family is not a good idea, It would make them not feel safe.

  • I don't think they should start it back up again because in today's society there will be way more crime. I believe you should have guns to protect yourself and if you enjoy hunting I feel you should be able to have guns. My family has guns and I don't think they would like it if someone came and confiscated our guns.

    • I agree that taking guns away would make a lot of people upset.

  • In my opinion doing buyback again could make sense because it has been told that 46% of the weapons in the whole world is on United States, which means only US has almost half of the weapons in the world. I don't know about other people but i would feel unsafe knowing this information as a citizen

  • I think that rather than a gun buy back program they should change the law to be more taught to get a gun. I think having guns supports violence and I think it is kinda scary how everyone can get one or has one. I also think that everyone having guns it's not a good idea because if something happens and they just try to protect themselves, there would be a shooting and innocent people could be shot. I don't have guns.

    • I agree that buying guns should be a little more strict.

  • I don't think they should start the gun buyback program again because of how the crime rate increased when they tried it last time. I think it's fine for people to own guns because they could use it to protect themselves or to hunt things. I think that people should be able to have their own guns to protect themselves and people would probably try to find a way around not giving up their guns anyway.

    • I agree that It increased crime last time they started it.

  • I think the gun buy back is a good program that should be brought back in certain parts of the U.S. I definitely think that it is your own right to own a gun and that you should excersize that right, but I think that in some of the less fortunate neighborhoods that this would be an excellent program. I don't think that anyone would try to take your gun away, but if they did you should fight like crazy for your rights.

  • I think it is your right to own weapons. A mandatory gun buyback is a bad idea because not everyone would want to give up their guns. I think a volunary gun buyback is fine because you don't need to give up your weapons.
