Got heat?

Defensive contractor, Lockheed Martin, has developed a laser over the past few years that is so powerful, it can burn a whole through a truck engine disabling it. This 60 kW - 120 kW laser beam ATHENA, short for Advanced Test High Energy Asset, will be introduced to the U.S. military in the year.

ATHENA's abilities give it a range of wattage based on the way the laser is built. The design allows operators to add or take away modules increasing or decreasing the lasers power.  Along with this design, ATHENA is said to be less high maintenance.

ATHENA's goal is to be able to help the military in-case "swarms of missiles" come and the laser can destroy them all. The laser can fire great distances with still having a high intensity of power.

My opinion: As a Spiderman movie once said, "With great power, comes great responsibility." That's what I think about the laser. When we have a weapon of power like this, we need to keep it controlled and not let the blueprints get in the wrong hands.

1. How do you think a weapon like this could contribute to the U.S.? Good or bad?

2. What do you think could/would happen if the blueprints did get into the wrong hands? Would different counties do different things?

  • Well done!!

  • I think it could be bad if it gets into the wrong hands. I think that very bad things could happen, countries could get out of control.

  • It would good for our war in some areas but alot of things can be destroy from it and could get out of controll, if someone got ahold of the gun it could be very bad it can do many things.

  • I think it could be very good, using them in the way you described. It could be VERY bad though if another country got a hold of this technology.

    • I agree with you Kevin that it would be very bad if another countries got a hold of the machine!

  • This would be a great contribution to the US military. But if it did get in the wrong hands, there would be a lot of trouble. This is a great thing and I hope it is introduced to the military soon.

    • Hopefully the military can find an effective use for the machine and use it responsibly.

  • I think there could be a good side and a bad side to having this laser technology in the United States. It could be a great asset for the military, but like you said, if the blueprints land in the wrong hands there could be humongous trouble. If the blueprints did get in the wrong hands, there are many possibilities that could happen. The people could realize they don't have the technology or smarts to make the laser, or they are able to produce it and cause havoc all over the world, or they use it the manipulate. There were probably be more laws made, but when it comes to criminals, they're going to find a loop hole in the system some how.

    • Criminals are known for doing that! Along with everyone else, if the blueprints do get in the wrong hands, things could get out of hand.

  • I think that this could contribute to the Us by keeping the country safe from other countries and from people inside our country. That would not go well if the wrong people got hold of the blue prints. It would probably be used for killing people and for damaging vehicles and homes if it got in the wrong hands.
