Edward Lunger, a man from Long Island out for a pleasant round of golf in Cancun, had his fingers bitten off by a crocodile. Lunger was playing at the picturesque Iberostar Cancun Golf Course when he shanked one to the left. However, an unusual and wholly frightening event quickly followed. Meanwhile, a 50 year old engineer, Mark Martin, was on the same hole and saw the crocodile leap up and bite Lunger's arm.

According to the report, the crocodile had Lunger up to his left elbow and pinned to the ground. Martin saw this and ran over, picked up a 40-pound boulder and smashed the crocodile on the head. The 50-year-old initially thought he had lost his entire hand, telling the New York Post that, "I’m thinking my whole hand is off. I couldn’t feel my hand. It was like my whole body was on fire."

Doctors managed to save his index finger, but unfortunately, his middle and ring digits had already been lost. If that weren't enough, the golfer found that he gained a very expensive bill for the procedure. Apperently they charged him $17,800 up front before they would even work on his hand.

While Lunger acknowledges that crocs will be crocs, but he is placing blame squarely on the resort, stating there was no mention of dangerous animals near the course. What's more, the $2.25 million-lawsuit purports the resort introduced crocodiles as an apparent attraction.

What do you guys think about this? Do you think the golf course should have had signs up? Do you think that a $2.25 million lawsuit is nessisary?

  • Levi,

Great summaries for both stories and you posed questions to the students. You did not reply very often, however, to student comments.

  • I do think that should be responsible for the medical bills of this mans procedures. I do no think that the resort should have to pay any more money than that to the man for the incident that happened.
  • I would agree that suing the Resort would be a great idea because he got his finger bitten off at their resort and there fore he should get some money from the resort to help pay for his medical expenses.

  • I think that price is very steep and unnecessary. I do think the resort should have signs or some kind of protection against dangerous animals.

  • I think the 2.25 million dollar lawsuit isn't necessary. I do think that they should had signs up. I partially think that it was the guys fault for not seeing the crocodile. Maybe he should just work on golf a little better so he won't shank it next time.

  • I think it is the resorts fault not letting their people know that their are dangerous animal on the course. You absolutely need to let all of the people know. You are putting peoples lives in danger.

  • I think it is necessary for sure it should be even more  money.

  • I think the golf course either needs to have warnings or get the crocodiles taken care of! No one should have to worry about that on vacaation

  • There should have been signs, but it's common sense that there is crocodiles in the water in Cancun, especially if the resort made crocs an attraction there.

  • I took a vacation in Florida a bit ago, I found out they post warnings if dangerous animals are supposed to be around. The resort definitely should have had either a sign or warning for visitors.
