Girl Quarterback Makes History

Alexandria Buchanan is the quarterback for the McKinley Tigers in Honalulu, Hawaii. She made history as the first girl to start a high school varsity game at quarterback Hawaii. She grew up playing at a local park with her father, Isacc, who was a former football player. She had seen other girls play football at positions such as wide reciever and running back, but she had never seen a girl quaterback. She insisted that her father show her how to throw a ball. He did and quickly relized "she had a cannon for a arm." In seventh grade, she played flag football at the Boys and Girls Club. In ninth grade she tried out for the junior varsity football team at McKinley High School. In her first game for the junior varsity game, she got a good hit, but she got back up. She became the full time starter by the end of that season. In her junior year, she was called up to make a start for the struggling Tiger's varisty team. They hadn't won a game for four years. In that game, she threw a touchdown along with 135 yards passing. They did not win that game, but she eventually did get three wins in that season before it was ended with a collarbone injury. She says she will be back for her senior year since she let her boys down the previous year. She has got some attention from NFL player such as Honalulu native Marcus Mariota and a face time call from Drew Brees.

How do you feel about females playing male dominated sports, such as football?

I feel like they can play these sports, but I don't think it is fair to the boys in that sport. Whatever they do, they could get some serious backlash. If they don't hit her, he gets called weak. If he hits her, he is mean. It is a lose-lose situation.

Do you think that we will here more stories like this? Explain.

I do believe that we will here more stories like this because the world of sports is always about going forward and progressing. I think there will be more progress like this. It is just like with records, the next generation is going to try to beat the previous generation's records.

  • Good job Alex!

  • I think it is very cool because its starting a new trend because a girl can do anything a guy can do. I do believe that there will be more stories like this because girls are becoming able to do more things.

  • I think it's rather liberating for females to not be afraid to do something of this sort. Just because females are generaly smaller, it doesn't mean they aren't strong or tough enough. There probably won't be for a while, but there definetly should be.

  • I think that females playing male sports is awesome and that a girl could have enough confidence to even try out for the support. I do think we will because the more we progress in the years people try more things, become more confident, think they con do more, so yes.

  • I think they should be able to play any sport they want. They are allowed to be able to join an all male team if there is no female team. I just think many poeple will bully the girl making her eventually quit the team. I hope their are more stories like this because most girls are too afraid in joining of what might happen if they do.

    • I'm not saying that they couldn't play, I'm just saying it isn't going to be an easy thing for the men to do what they are supposed to do in the game of football. I really doubt that she would get bullied.

  • 1)I think that it is good that females are playing male dominated sports because in the future you will see more FEMALE.

2)I defiently believe now till the in the future Female will take over. I believe that in the future Female will dominate.

  • I think it is good! I played ice hockey when I was younger, and I think it makes you a stronger person as a girl if you have to prevail against boys. I think so because women are more powerful now than in the past and more accepted.

    • That is really cool that you played ice hockey! I don't know how physical it was when you were playing but the sport of hockey could be about as tough and physical as football if not more.

  • i don't think its fair because the men playing can't hit her hard without becoming mean or something and if they don't tackle her hard then there coach could bench them even if they don't deserve it.
