Superstar wide reciever OBJ agrred to a 5 year $95 million dollar deal with the Giants today. The Giants considered the contract to be "Lucrative". He is guarenteed $65 million and is now the highest paid reciever in the league. Videos of OBJ dancing in the locker room after the deal was complete were posted on social media and lit up Giants fans days. One of OBJ's close friends and teammats, Roger Lewis, tweeted this earlier today. "Congrats to my brudda couldn’t be more proud been solid since day one helped me a lot on my journey... you deserve it...MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!" Beckham was asked how he felt about the contract in the team press conference and his only words were, "Honestly, I don't even know how to explain it". Beckham actually didn't show up to any summer camps or training sessions because he wanted a new contract to play for the Giants. Now that he is gaurenteed 5 years and almost $100 million dollars he will definitly be coming to practice.

Do you think Beckham kind of "going on strike" for a new contract played a role in how much he was payed and how long the contract is?

I don't think him missing practice and camp and stuff helped his contract because I think they were going to give it to him anyways.

If Beckham didn't "go on strike" do you think his contract would've been higher or lower?

I think he might have gotten a higher money price actually.

  • Good job overall. Your personal thoughts are quite brief. Consider that if you answer your questions briefly, others will as well.

  • When you get to this level of professional athleticism, you should be paid what you deserve, in Beckham's case, he  doesn't neccesarily deserve to get paid that much, because he more than likely makes millions off branding and other sales related schemes. I do believe he deserves to get paid more now than what he did then,  but not this high of raise, regardless of his popularity.

    • I agree Baylor. I feel like he really deserved another contract but not so much of a raise. This raise plus all the branding and sales is a lot of money just for a reciever. Thanks for commenting.

  • 1. I think that this did make a difference, because put yourself in the managers shoes and think, if your star player didn't show up for practice and events and went on "strike", wouldnt you be afraid that he could do this in games as well?

    2. If he didn't go on strike I don't beleive that he would be the highest paid reciever in the NFL right now, so yes, I think that it did affect it.

    • Yea that makes sence. I guess hust in my brain I think of him being kind of pushy and greedy and I would not want to pay him as much but then aagain, it makes a lot of sence that they don't want to lose there star player.

  • I think that Odell's strike was not needed. A good football player like him should have gone just to show his talent and get noticed for a new contract. I also think if Beckham had not gone on strike, his new contract would be much higher.

    • Yea I agree with you there Cass. I think he should've went and been the great leader he is but then again I understand why he thought it was a good idea not to go to camps and stuff.

  • I think that many of these players have sort of a since of entitlment even after their making millions of dollars. The greed of money is the root of all evil and you see famous celebrities and sports stars seeking more and more money all the time. I don't beileve going on strike is fair to the program or his teammates. If Beckham didn't go on strike I don't beileve he would have been paid higher because if he isn't demanding and holding out on them they don't need to pay him neccesarily more. Many of these huge programs are stingey with money and will pay you as less as they can.

    • Thanks for replying Jeremiah. I like what you said there. I agree 100% percent that the greed for more money is evil. It takes people over sometimes and doesn't let go. If you look around pretty much every sport that you make money in. Contract money is sky rocketing in every sport for every player.

  • It could have had some impact, but Odell Beckham Jr is a very good football player. I believe he deserves a bunch of money. Again, I don't think it made that much of a difference in contract talks.
