A Georgia judge Thursday sentenced a teenager to life in prison without parole plus 105 years in the March shooting death of a 13-month-old boy.

De'Marquise Elkins was convicted in August of multiple charges, including felony murder, in the shooting death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago during a robbery.

Elkins was spared the death penalty because he was only 17 when the baby was shot.

Elkins also was convicted of aggravated assault and other charges for shooting a pastor during an earlier mugging. His mother, Karimah Elkins, has been convicted of tampering with evidence for her role in trying to cover up the child's shooting in Brunswick, about 75 miles south of Savannah.

Why do you think he shot the baby?

  • Good post but you didn't do your other post and you didn't respond to any student comments.

  • He definitely deserves the death penalty for what he did. That child will never be able to experience anything. Not school, marriage, being a parent, nothing. Elkins stole that from him. Santiago was just over a year old.

  • Who in their right mind would shot a baby? What has a baby ever done to anyone besides make you change their diaper. Hes lucky he didn't get the death penalty, but his long years in prison isn't gonna be fun.

  • I would have no clue why he shot the baby maybe he thought it was in the way or maybe he was just really angry. I don't know why anyone would kill a baby they don't do much and the have no idea what they are doing. Maybe the guy is just messed up in the brain.

  • I think he was probably a physco or nut job.

  • Maybe the baby was getting more attention than him and he wanted to be noticed, but that's still not a good reason to shoot an innocent baby. I don't know why the mother would try to cover it up either. I could never bring myself to shoot anyone even if I was very mad at them.

  • I think that is just sick that he would even begin to think that's okay to do! He shouldn't have been robbing that house in the first place. I think he deserves all the time that will be served to him.

  • The mental stability and health of the robber should be looked into. No sane person kills an infant, or robs houses truly but that could be a key factor.

  • The baby must have gotten in the way during the robbery, or he was really nervous and the baby came out of nowhere so he shot him because he was frightened. I think he deserves what he was charged with. Even if he didn't mean to kill the baby on purpose he still deserves all of it.

  • I think that he deserves a high sentence but when you think about people get much lower when they do worse things
