In Parkland, Florida on Valentine’s Day, a former student of  Douglas High School opened fire on the students resulting in 17 casualties. Tons of terrified students were frantically texting their parents. A 17 year old in the school had sent a cryptic message to his parents that read, "Mom and Dad, there have been shots fired on campus at school. There are police sirens outside. I'm in the auditorium and the doors are locked." The parents receiving texts from the students frantically made their way to the school where they were held back by the authorities. A parent of the shooting made a statement saying that the one thought running through his brain when he received a message from his son was that he had forgotten to tell him that he loved him that morning while dropping him off at school.

If you were a parent of a child in that situation, what would be running through your mind?

I would be terrified for the life of my child, as anyone would be. No parent or child deserves to be put into that situation.

What are your thoughts on gun violence after hearing about this tragedy?

I believe that they should make it more difficult to obtain guns because of horrible things like this happening. No one is trying to take guns away. They are only trying to make it harder for people like the shooter to obtain them.

  • Well done Ainsley!

  • If I was a parent of one of those children, I would have been hysterical due to the threat towards the safety of my children. I think there should be restrictions on laws related to purchasing guns and should be stricter background checks.

    • There definitly needs to be much stricter laws and more restrictions and more in depth background checks when purchasing guns, especially because of the mass amount of school shootings that have happened this year.

  • 1. I would be scared to absolute death for the life of everybody! I would also feel angry at the shooter for doing such a thing to kill seventeen people and make the survivors go through such a traumatic experience.

    2. I believe taking guns away isn't the answer. I think that making them harder to obtain and making sure that the buyer of the gun has a good mental background are some solutions to prevent shootings like this one.

  • I would be very scared for my child. I would pray and hope he/she was ok and wasn't injured. I would also do anything in my power to help. I would not want anything to happen to my child nor for others, but I would stand by those who were wounded.

  • I would be crapping my pants, even if I heard a gun shot in the school anyhwere I would hide or run one of the two. I think they need to ban assault rifles but not shotguns because we need shotguns for hunting.

    • I would also be terrified, and I do think that they should ban assault rifles, but for shot guns, even making it a little bit harder to obtain the guns would help with all the shooting happening.

  • If I was a parent I would be pretty frantict to get to the school and terrified for the life of the kids. This tragedy, as sad as it is, is like the many before it and have made the point clear. Gun laws are not gonna stop people from doing this no matter what they will be able to get their hands on a weapon so other precautions are needed besides laws.

  • 1. I can not think like a father, because I do not have children, but I am sure that I would be very nervous and very afraid, you never escpect that this can happens to you, until it happens.

    2. My opinion about weapons remains the same before and after the shooting, it has happened many times this in the United States, maybe they should learn and start having a serious control over the weapons, because it is not normal to have a shooting every month where innocent people die

    • I agree with everything you said. There have been too many shootings this year and it is only February.
