Former NFL Player Killed

After road rage confrontation Saturday night, 34 year old former New Orleans player Will Smith was shot and killed by a local football player. Around 11:30 PM a man driving a Hummer H2, rear-ended Will Smith's Mercedes Benz SUV. They got out and exchanged some words when the driver then whipped out a handgun and fired. He was shot and killed on the scene, where as his wife Racquel was hospitalized from 2 bullets striking her leg.

The shooter oddly stayed at scene of the crime, and when the police arrived he was arrested. Cardell A. Hayes who is 28 was charged with second degree murder.

---QUESTIONS---

1. Why do you think Cardell killed Will Smith and shot the wife?

2. Do you think it was weird he stayed at the scene after killing Will? Why or why not?

3. Why do you think he stayed at the scene?

My opinion: I think he was just going crazy and was very upset, and so when Will was the one who got in his way he took him out. I think it was very weird, but maybe he realized he deserved to go to jail.

  • Great job Perri!

  • Probably because there is always disagreement between people. but nobody knows them. I think he was probably not all mentally there. I think it is kind of weird. I think he stayed because he knew he was going to get in trouble so might as well keep it easy.

    • That could be a big part, because if you don't have some sort of mental issues you usually would not do something like this.

  • Between football teams there is always a rival. Most of the time the are unknown rivals.. So maybe he thought it was better for his football team if he wasn't on the team. I think it was kind weird yes because mose people flee the scene because of shock and guilt. But I guess it was easier on the cops to not have to look for him. He probably stayed because of guilt or knew that he needed help.

    • Yes, but it was NFL and college, not the same so I doubt they would be rivalries but could be. I agree with your last sentence!

  • There could have been other problems between the two we don't know about, and we don't know what was said before he was shot. He could have really bad anger issues, also. Normally, a person would leave the crime scene after something like that, but it's a good thing he did stay. He would have been found anyways, and he probably realized his mistake.

    • True, I guess they could have known each other, but I am guessing they did not know each other before the accident. I agree that he most likely realized after that he would get caught so he just decided to turn himself in.

  • Maybe they were having some conflict and weren't agreeing on something before the incident. He could've also been having some family or friend issues.

    • That could be true yes, and true maybe that spiked his anger.

  • I think he was just mad about the whole situation and his care being damaged, even though that shouldn't be an excuse to shoot someone. I do think its weird that he stayed at the scene, it's like he wanted the police to arrest him. Maybe he was freaked out that he just shot someone and didn't know what to do.
