Former Minnesota cop charged with 2nd degree murder

Now former police officer Kim Potter killed African American man in a traffic stop the traffic stop was due to the George Floyd case. Kim Potter meant to pull out her taser and not her gun "protesters and Wright’s family members say there’s no excuse for the shooting". Potter was charged with second-degree manslaughter in Minnesota on Wednesday 4/14/21. Potter did resign a day before the trial. The reason Daunte Wright was first pulled over for expired tags "but they sought to arrest him after discovering he had an outstanding warrant". He got the warrant because he didn't show up to court and he fled while he possessed a gun without a permit.

One of the officers there had their body cam footage that was released Monday which showed all their actions and you heard Potter yell “I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!” then she fired the gun and Wright drove off and later died. some information to release is her taser was on her left gun was on her right taser had a yellow grip while the gun has a black grip. Experts said, "cases of officers mistakenly firing their gun instead of a taser are rare".

I feel that yes, this was accidental but there were big differences in where the gun was and the taser. The colors between them are very different and Potter did stand there saying "taser" and she still didn't release that she was holding her gun.

Do you think Potter should be charged more?

How do you feel about this happening?

  • Good topic choice Emily and your summary is good. Be sure to comment more frequently.

  • I don’t think that she should be charged with murder. Everyone makes mistakes every day because we are all human and those are the things we learn from. I feel like she was so caught up in trying to get him under control that she didn’t even realize that she had her gun in her hand. After she shot him she realized that she made a big mistake and that is why she resigned from her job.

  • I don't think that Potter should be charged more because she got exactly what she deserved already. She lost her job, and she was found guilty for murder, and both of those things are exactly what should have happens. Small mistakes like that can not be made in a field like hers, and it comes to show us just how much it cost her.

  • I think this is very unfortunate because this mistake cost Potter her career. It really is too bad that this happened. I think the fact that he was African American doesn't help her case because conclusions are drawn fast by us. I understand how this could've been a mistake but it was a big enough mistake to cost her her career. I don't think she should be charged with anything more because it has been decided that she is already charged with second=degree manslaughter. People will argue about what degree of murder she should be charged with but either way, she is being charged of murder and has already resigned.

  • I don't think she should be charged more. She was already given the sentence for the murder, there is no reason to give her extra charges. Whether she really did confuse her gun and tazer or not, she has accepted her charges and is retired. She was doing her job.

  • I don't think that she should be charged more. She accepted that she killed someone, and she got the sentence for it. I feel confused at how this happened at all. I didn't hear much about this story until it become national news, and when it did I was confused about she could confuse a gun for a tazer. Granted, she was doing her job and made a mistake that she'll have to deal with that now that she's retired.

  • I do not think that Potter should be charged more. I think this because people make mistakes all the time. Doctors make mistakes that cost people their lives all the time. I think everyone is making a big deal about this because this man was African American. If the person was white, there would have been no outcry and Potter most likely would have just been fired. The case would not be in the news and you would never know that it happened if the man was white.

  • No she shouldn't be charged more because she didn't mean to pull the gun which she did and the guy didn't deserve to die but he was trying to escape. I think her getting charged was good for the family because he didn't deserve to be shot but he did try and run and he did have warrents and wasen't the greatest guy.

  • I think that what they think is the best to charge her should be that becasue if she was expirenced she should know the diffrence and whre they are placed. I think that officers should be trained more since this happend and they should know where there weapons are. I think that they should also make sure officers know what they are doing and have more caution.

  • I don't think the cop should be charged anymore. I think that it was a complete accident because of how the guy was resisting and how she responded when she shot him in the video. I think that she should have known the difference between her gun and a taser though.
