Flying Cars Might Be Here in 2023!

It seems like sci-fi movies are finally coming true with Textron's Bells Division's new flying cars. The new air taxi concept was shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), an annual trade show that shows off new products and technologies that will lead us to the future. This air taxi is called the Nexus, which is a pretty cool name for a pretty cool vehicle if you ask me. The Nexus seats up to four people and looks like a mix of a sports car and a helicopter. Textron isn't the only company introducing flying vehicles however. Electrafly also showed off its concept of a flying car, looking more like a motorcycle with wings. It seats one person and is actually said to be ideal for military purposes. Other versions can be made for air taxis, search and rescue, or even shipping and delivery. However, all of these vehicles are still models and are being tested. There are a lot of legal technicalities as well. It will be hard to make these small aircrafts legal to fly in the US.

The Bell Nexus hybrid electric air taxi concept is on display at the Bell booth at CES International

Do you think that flying cars will be a success? Why or why not?

As much as I love the idea of being able to fly in a flying car, I feel like it will be a let down. With how much money it will probably cost to own one of these, it's unlikely that many people will be able to own one unless they are insanely wealthy. It's just a glorified form of transportation. More than likely, air-taxi drivers will charge an insane amount for short distances, so really, no one is going to be able to use them. It might be a one time thing to do just so you can say you have done it, but not many people are going to be able to use it.

Would you want to try and air taxi or would you just stick to solid ground?

Of course I would love to try it, but the real question is at what cost? If it’s going to be ridiculously overpriced and cost more than a regular plane ticket, than count me out.

  • Well done! Be sur to go back and check comments the entire week.

  • It is a good idea but then like you said they are probably going to be expensive and also there would have to be some things to add for these flying cars to work like a place to land for example or more than just one seat. I would like to stick to the ground because one malfunction and these flying cars will be gone.

  • 1 - I think that flying cars will be very hard to make work. With all of the legal difficulties and all of the air control that would have to take place, it seems like it will be very ard for these concepts to "take flight" for the everyday consumer. But for military purposes, I think that they will be huge within the next few years if they keep advancing.

  • I want them to, but like you said, it might take longer because of the legal technologies. Well I would want to try it. But I think we will be sticking on the ground for awhile. And I would also consider how other people are talking about it.

  • 1.) I think flying cars would be popular for the rich. One of these will cost a lot I'm assuming. It's like a glorified helicopter. People might ride in it once just to say they flew in a flying car. However, as we advance through the years flying cars are going to become a normal thing. So at first they might not be popular but pretty soon most people are going to have one.

2.) It would be very fun to try one. However, I am kinda broke so I woulnd't be able to afford it considering it costs a lot to ride in one.

  • I think it depends on if it will be a success or not. By the looks of it, these are just in the making and are not ready for use. The picture shown and the information given tells me that these projects are just a look-but-not-touch type deal. I feel like these projects might have some potential, but if they work like hoverboards or airplanes. I would think that the people that drive these vehicles need to be liscensed drivers. I would like to experience one of these flying cars assuming that they will exist in the near future.

  • I completely agree with your statements above. Sci-Fi movies have completely romanticized the flying car, which is really just a small airplane/helicopter that will be insanely expensive. It will more than likely be out of reach for the common consumer, but if these become more common, an event similar to the Model T may take place, where they become affordable to the middle class.

  • I think flying cars won't be a success, at least not right now. As many new products come and go, they're often very expensive and unpopular once they are made public. Perhaps in the far future, once the cars have been around, they'll become cheaper to build and more desirable in the public eye.

  • I think that flying cars will be a success, but only in certain markets. I don't really think that it will be become popular or common with the common people (middle class), it might just be more of an asset to the rich or big companies who need to deliver things faster. Also, like you said, it could be used in the military.

  • I think it will be a long and bumpy road until flying cars would be a success. I'm sure there are toonnns of factors that play into this. I'm sure it would be insanely expensive too and how would it affect airplanes and their flights?
