Fatal Mosquito Virus Detected in Massachusetts

According to the Massachusetts Department of Health a strain of a fatal virus spread by Mosquitoes has been found in Massachusetts. The virus is called Eastern Equine Encephalitis or EEE for short. EEE has two new cases a young girl and an elderly lady. The total number of EEE cases in Massachusetts is now at 7 with one fatality. In a 2004- 2006 outbreak there were 22 cases, and about 30 percent result in death. Right now Thirty Six Massachusetts communities are at high risk for EEE. According to the Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Dr. Monica Bharel, " This is why we continue to urge the public to take seriously the threat that mosquitoes can pose and to take steps to avoid being bitten."

How can you protect yourself from mosquitoes?

I would wear extra protective bug spray and heavy clothing.

Why do you think there is another outbreak this Year?

I Think there is another outbreak possibly because of the amount of rain this area has had.

  • Well done overall Mason. I do think your questions could be stronger, especially the second one.

  • To protect myself from mosquitoes I can wear lots of bug spray and long pants and a long sleve shirt. If they were really bad or could cause health problems I would just stay inside unless I really needed to go outside. I think there is another outbreak this year because it has been pretty hot and mixed with the amount of rain they have gotten probably makes it pretty humid, which can cause more mosquitoes to come out.

  • If I had to protect myself from mosquitoes I would use probably something like a mosquito net around me, I would put on mosquitoe spray before I went out, and I would wear lots of cloths. There is another outbreak possibly because people aren't getting shots for these virusis and some people probably can't afford to buy the things to treat this virus.

    • I agree with you on the spray and protective clothes but would normal people really be nervous enough to wear a whole mosquito net around them? I think most people would just wear spray and protective clothing. I also agree this disease would be very expensive to treat.

  • Its not easy to protect yourself from some mosquitos bet most are stopped from bug spray or extra layers. I think that the out breaks happen because of the mosquito migrations that happen every year and that they happened to have"EEE" this migration.

    • I agree with you on it being tough to protect yourself from mosquitoes, how many people want to go around with a long sleeved shirt and pants in the middle of the summer. Also I didn't think about how mosquitoes migrate like birds I suppose they could carry different diseases and such.

  • I think that a simple way to protect yourself would be to wear protective clothing. Another thing a person could do would be to limit the ammount of time they are outside when mosquitoes are outside. I think that there is an outbreak this year because maybe the weather is different and it is warmer than normal. This would lead to more mosquitoes breeding.

  • Be smart and buy bug spray or use a smoke fogger and wear clothing that covers your skin. Becasuse the mosuitoes are getting it from the water that drains out of feids and other chemicaly sprad areas.

    • I didn't think about the fogger I knew mosquitoes didn't like fire but a fogger is a good idea, and I agree with you on the bug spray and protective clothing, that is always a really great idea. Do you think the mosquitoes are getting the EEE from the feilds and chemically spraid areas or just what did you mean?

  • You can stay inside, apply a lot of bug spray, avoid areas where people were recently infected, use mosquito traps, and cover skin. The outbreak could be caused by the mass of mosquitos in the area plus some unknown conditions on the end of how the disease was developed. Maybe a mosquito slurped the blood of an infected animal.
