On November 29th, Margaret Porkka died while on vacation in the Caribbean. The family was told her body was taken to Emerald Funeral Home in St. Maarten where the funeral directer denied them access to see the body and demanded a 7,000 dollar wire-transfer-only fee in order to get the body back to the United States. When the body arrived on December 6th, it was not their mother. The body was tall and brunett, and their mother was short and blonde. The body was dressed in their mother's clothes and had her passport and death certificate. Along with the incorrect body was a red velvet pouch of jewelry that did not belong to their mother.
Desperate to get their mother's body, the family made numerous calls to the hospital and funeral home. None of those calls have been answered nor returned. Personally, this disturbs me. I think that the funeral directer asking for $7,000 for the body is suspicious and I would think that for that kind of money you should get the correct body. I feel horrible for the family and can only hope that their mothers body is not being disrespected. Do you think the funeral home should be investigated for this? What would you do in this situation?

Terrible situation at a very sad time. Good job on the post!
This is weird. I wouldn't even know what to do if something like this happened to me.. I definitely think the funeral home needs to be investigated.
I think the funeral home should definatly be searched into about this because you shouldn't scam someone into paying for a person that isn't even their family.
I would be mad if this was my family. It would be very suspicious that this director asked for that much money and then gave them the wrong body in their mothers clothes. I would be concerned about what really happened to her.
I believe there are criminals behind this. Just think about it. These people could have kidnapped this woman, taken her clothes and possessions, and then bribe or threaten the funeral home director to contact the family saying she is dead. The shock of hearing a family member is dead would no doubt urge the family to cough up whatever amount of money they asked for.
This was without a doubt a scam to get money. The fact that he told them to send $7000 before they could see the body is a definite indicator that something is not right.
The funeral home should be investigated because that 7,000 dollars that the family lost for the wrong body.
I think the funeral home should definitely be investigated. I hope this family will get the body of their mother back. I think its weird how they asked for 7,000 dollars. I wonder what all that money actually went to.
I feel bad for the family that has to deal with that problem. They should try and find out who the deceased body belongs to and see if their mother would be there. Someone should try and figure out where the body is and how to get it switched.
that is really weird! yes i think they should be investigated because that just doesn't happen, i wouldn't know what to do in that situation if i was that family but i would be very upset
