Evolution Redefined?

This week in Ethiopia, a fragment of a jaw bone, including 5 teeth, was discovered that dates back over 2.8 million years ago! That means that humans existed 400,000 years before scientists had thought previously (evolution says that "people" should still be apes at this point in history). The bone was found in the Afar region located in Ethiopia. Africa is known as the "hotbed" or birthplace of the human species. Although the scientists only have a small part of a jaw and 5 teeth, the team believes that they will be able to identify the species of these fossils. The tests have not come back yet, but there is a possibility that this bone isn't even a homo-sapien (the human species) but something that our modern world has never seen before!

Do you believe in evolution? Why or why not?

Do you think that this could possibly be human? Or something else ... ? How would you imagine this creature?

  • Great job!!

  • I believe in evolution, no doubt about it. I believe that we had to start off as something, that adapted into something better, that adapted into something even better, which had adapted into us, what we are today, and will later in the future adapt into something even 2x as good. I believe it could be human, or primate. Because human's might have needed more teeth back then for whatever reason in this location and were just given them to make sure they could handle it.

  • I do not believe in evolution.  I guess its just because I was raised to believe in God. I think this is something else. Not human.

  • Evolution is a test of your religion. It is trying to break you and it is somewhat of a test god is putting on people today. Thats how I see it.

    • Why is it a test to your religion? I don't understand how it would test your religion. We trust science enough to get us through everyday life and I think that we can trust scientists enough with this information ...

  • Yes i believe in it because without it there would be no way to explain all the things that happened. I think that it could  possibly be something else entirely which would be really interesting and make me want to learn more.

    • Considering that you may believe in the evolution theories to an extent, do you really believe in something else out there? What exactly do you believe in and how do you imagine this creature?

  • I don't really do. It's just hard for me to believe in all of that hardcore evolution theories. It could be any creature as far as we know and maybe it would be a human or something that looks like a human

    • This story makes me wonder whether or not it's really human ... I agree with you that it would resemble us. So do you believe in evolution?

  • I personally find it really difficult to believe in the evolution because I think that if it took us "blank" years to transform from a monkey to a human, that we would eventually continue to see changes in the body development. It's cool to see that scientists are finding more and more fossils, but do I believe that humans lived on the 2.8 million years ago, no. Sometimes it's hard for me to agree with the numbers that the scientists calculate as in how many years ago things were. (Sometimes it feels like they over guess things)
