Rodney Long escaped from Clarinda Correctional Facility’s minimum security prison. Two days later he shot officer Dan Wyckoff two times, but luckily the shots were not fatal, and the officer is expected to recover.
Four days after Rodney escaped he broke into the house of 71-year old Jerome Mauderly and his wife, Jerome is a retired prison guard. Rodney then disabled the phones, and held the couple hostage for 4 hours. But after 4 hours Jerome had had enough and grabbed his shotgun in self defense and shot Rodney Long once. Nobody else was injured in the shooting.
If you ask me this is why guns should NOT be banned. Rodney Long also had a semi-automatic weapon, so if the homeowner did not have a gun this ordeal could have turned out very differently. What are your thoughts?

I have been preaching this from the start. Banning Firearms is going to take the citizens' abilities to defend themselves. It's unconstitutional. Banning firearms is not going to stop them from being in the country. Criminals commit crimes because it is against the law, banning firearms is not going to stop them from getting, if anything it will make criminals have MORE firearms.
It's not like a criminal is going to go, "Oh! Firearms are now banned. I guess I have to stop shooting people. Nope."
im glad that the couple had a gun to save themselves. i think your right that guns should not be banned. and i think that the man deserved to be shot.
Weapons should not be banned because if your being robbed then and you can't get help then what would you do? There is really nothing you can do about people having automatic weapons, but if you do ban it then you could drop the amount of weapons by a drastic amount.
Banning guns is dumb, do you think criminal are going to follow the law, clearly not if their thugs or gang members. The people need to understand some people don't know how to react to things like this it would be hard to do the right thing but getting a permit to carry would be good for most people that are able to get them.
This was self defense and 100% completely acceptable. This 71 year old man got a serious threat to society off the streets. He should be proud of himself.
We hear about stories like this in other parts of the country, but it's kind of scary how close to us this one was. I think you make a really good point, while I haven't decided my personal opinion on the gun control issue, this is a really good example of why they shouldn't be banned.
This is a good example of the second amendment. It is really weird something like this happened so close to our own town. We're lucky Iowa doesn't have more strict of gun laws like some other states.
yes, this guy was put in jail for something very minor, and he lost his life because he escaped. If you ask me it wasn't worth it.
i agree, Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but they have one of the worst crime rates in the country.
I feel that this is a great reason we should be able to have guns. Even though their are bad reasons to have them but this saved a life of people who did not deserve to die.
