As you've probably all heard, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the east coast this weekend, and happened about 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia, and was felt on most of the east coast. The building inspectors found cracks at the top stones of the Monuments. Luckily ther weren't any injuries, but engineers evacuated the building as a precaution, and closed the monument while inspectors were working to fix the problem. Most of the buildings that had been evacuated were reopened by Tuesday. The US Capitol was also affected so inspectors let employees gather their things, but wouldn't let them stay long, while engineers work on it. The earthquake itself was 3.7 miles deep, and 88 miles soutwest of Washington D.C. near Mineral, Virginia.I'm really glad that noone was hurt by this earthquake, and im amazed that it was actually strong enough to put cracks in so many of these important buildings. I also wonder why they haven't made these buildings strong enough to handle an earthquake, because shouldn't they be prepared for anything to happen?? (That's just my opinion)http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/08/24/virginia.quake/index.html?hpt=hp_t2The pictures that I have are of the Washington Monument 11 hours after the Earthquake, and the Capitol building 18 hours after the Earthquake.
