El Chapo's Drug Kingdom Brought to an End

After collecting a whopping 56 witnesses for the prosecution, El Chapo’s trial began. Joaquin Guzman, “El Chapo,” is a notorious drug lord in Mexico. He is known for his brutal killings and control over the cocaine business in Central America. The prosecution, the people charging El Chapo for his crimes, spent a total of 11 weeks preparing their case and 30 days to present it to the jury. The defense called one witness and rested after a total of 30 minutes defending his case. When Guzman was asked questions, he chose not speak on his own behalf. The prosecution called witnesses including Guzman's wife, mistresses, former employees, and bodyguards. All of them testified to El Chapo’s treacherous crimes and actions.

Each version of the story told withheld a dramatic edge, each included gruesome details about murders El Chapo had done. They included details of cold-blood murders, how the gang leader waterproofs packaging for cocaine and the tales of escaping the police. Within the trial, he was even accused of bribing the former Mexican President, Enrique Piña Nieto, with 100 million dollars. The President of course denied it. Mr. Guzman is 61 years old and is being charged with trafficking more than 440,000 pounds of cocaine. His jury includes 7 women and 5 men and they are expected to find him guilty during their meeting on Monday, February 4th.

Why do you think the police so long to catch and prosecute El Chapo?

I think it has taken so long because El Chapo has scapegoats set up in case he would be close to getting caught. I’m guessing he has a very good system set up to keep himself out of jail.

Do you think El Chapo has a way for himself to get out of these charges? (As in a way to bribe the jury)

No, I think that he has finally accepted that he has been caught and can't get himself out of all the bad things he's done.

  • Well done Liz!

  • He's good at hiding at hiding things and he probably scared people so they wouldn't call the cops on him. I think El Chapo just might have something else up his sleve, but he probably has finally given up.

  • I think that it took so long for the police to find him because he was probably sneaky and covered his tracks. He probably has a way to bribe the jury, but I really doubt that they will let him go.

  • I think it took the police a long time to catch and prosecute El Chapo because he probaly had a good system as you said and he had a plan. He knows how to not get caught for awhile but now he has gotten caught. No, I think he's done to bad to get him out of this awful situation.

    • So do you think that he could possibly have a system or plan set up to get himself out of this situation? Or that he never thought he would get caught so didn't think about? I also wonder how he feels about his people going against him.

  • 1. I think it took so long because they had to gather all their evidence and he has probably learned how to lay low.

    2. I'm not sure they'll buy any bribes they give him because it's already so blatenly obvious that he's guilty. He'd have better luck trying to break out of prison.

  • Everyone knows that El Chapo is a brillant guy he's been selling drugs for many years, so I think the judge would not go so easy on him I  feel him getting out of jail is a slim chance to none, I think after this guility trail many people would start to go back to normal and living there lives

  • I think he is a very smart man and knows how to get away from the police. He probably has a lot of people that he could throw under the bus if he needed to. I think he could get out of it but I don't think he will. Everyone would know exactly what he did and he'd never be able to live "normal" again.

    • So, my question is what did he have to do to get people to be willing to be thrown under the bus for him? Did he threaten them or did they just have that much loyalty towards El Chapo? Also, I don't really think he has ever lived "normal" but I understand what you are saying.

  • I suppose El Chapo has a very efficient arrangement for how he transfers and sells drugs, thus being why it took so long for the police to catch and prosecute El Chapo. Although I do believe that lE Chapo loves his wife and I don't think she will be able to help bribe him out of the things he has been caught for.
