Earthquakes in Southern California

On Friday night a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook Los Angeles and the nearby area. There was little damage other than a few water mains breaking in some neighborhoods. This was the second earthquake in two weeks not including some minor aftershocks for each. In 1994, California experienced a 6.7 magnitude quake that killed dozens and caused billions of dollars in damage. The incident comes in second to Hurricane Katrina in terms of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. History. Some people believe that the recent earthquakes in Southern California will soon be considered nothing compared to the earthquake that is to come. They believe that a larger quake will come that will rival the one in 1994.

I think that there might be some minor earthquakes in the next few months in California but nothing that will cause significant damage. What do you think of the situation? Do you believe that a larger quake will soon come? And if so… what magnitude?

  • Good job!

  • Its good it wasnt that big and i think that they wont get any bigger ones that what they just got.

  • I'm glad this earthquake caused little damage. hopefully if there is more earthquakes they will be small ones

    • I agree, hopefully a larger earthquake doesn't happen

  • I saw an article on the internet that there was a bigger earthquake that was going to happen.

  • I hope that it'll get better by summer, I'm going there on vacation! If it does happen, I think that it will be very costly, but I doubt that it will be any higher than a 7 magnitude. I bet a lot of rich people living in big houses are starting to get nervous there.

    • I agree, I don't think there will be many more earthquakes that are a higher magnitude than the ones that have happened recently
