Earth's doppelganger

In 2009 NASA launched the Kepler program costing close to $600 million in search for other earth like habitable planets. Last year NASA found Kepler-452b which is the closest earth like plant to be found today. The planet is 1,400 light years away from earth in a constellation called "Cygnus" and is about 60% bigger than earth. But scientists still have some things to figure out, like if the planet has rocky soil or even air to breath. The best feature about the planet is that it is in the star's habitable region, which means it is capable of supporting life and liquid water. NASA is almost certain that this planet has an atmosphere, and if so one thicker than earth's. The number of days it takes to complete a year or once cycle around the sun is also very similar, 365 days on earth and 385 days on Kepler-452b. The scientists at NASA say that the planet has been here for 6 billion years which is long enough to create and sustain life.

I think it's kind of cool that there are other planets out there like earth and maybe possible of life. I'm not saying I believe in aliens but you'd think that with how big the universe is there would be other life out there somewhere and they might be on this planet. People talk as if we are going to destroy our planet and we might have to move to another planet and NASA thinks this could be the once.

Do you think this planet has life similar to ours or any life at all?

If we end up having to move planets in the far future do you think Kepler-452b would be a good choice and why?

  • Again, good summary but you didn't reply to any student comments, which is worth ten points per story.

  • It could have life similar to ours and it may not be like a living animal life maybe even plant life. And I think that Kepler-452b would be a good idea if it ever came to a situation like that but they still have many things to figure out.

  • yes, if it has soil and water i think that there will be life on the planet. I think there is a purpose for all the plants out there , they are not all just created for nothing. Well it would be a good choice to move to because it is the closets plant that is mostly like us.

  • I think it's awesome that NASA found another planet with an atmosphere similar to ours. Although I believe that there could be life on the planet, I don't think that we will be able to visit the planet in the near future as it is so far away. I don't think it's possible to move planets or to move from one planet to another, especially since we don't exactly know if we would be able to survive in its' atmosphere.

  • Yes it is possible that it has life similar to Earth's. Kepler-452b could also have no life or just plant, or just no sentient life form. Yes it could be the planet but the effect on on the human would be great for one Kepler-452b is bigger then the Earth meaning that there is more gravity on that planet. It would be extremely hard walk or just normal task.

  • It's possible that it has life similar to that of Earth's, but at the same time it could only have plant life, so the possibilities of the life forms on Kepler-452b is near limitless.

Yes, considering that in the far future we would have more data on this planet, but that's only if the data about this planet comes back good for sustaining life. Though it not impossible for it to be bad for sustaining life for some ironic twist.
